gauge clusters

Recommended Posts

It's possible. The circuit foil behind the cluster has clearly printed out termination point ID. You will have to hardwire these terminations on the foil to the appropriate gauge(s) inputs you swap into the cluster. I've done this using an RHD Euro cluster so I could use the 120KM speedo. You will need complete factory wiring diagrams for both the before and after clusters, and it must be done as bench work and fully tested on the bench before install otherwise smoke may arise. Advice - If you don't know what you are doing and do not have the correct FSM wiring diagrams, forget about it. Just do the simple complete cluster swap and change out the appropriate temp and oil switches to gauge sensors. Much easier.

Well now reading back i did'nt explain myself to clearly lol. Take Two......I have a 86 2.5 MT and I'm going to get a whole different cluster with the tachometer on it. Mine current cluster doesnt have a tach and it has a giant fuel gauge on it. So the tach wiring is already in the wire harness of my truck even though it never came with tach or will I have to run wiring for it? And will all the wiring for the other cluster be the same all will have to do is relocate the fuel gauge wires correct?

I don't know exactly what year I just emailed the parts guy. Its a early type he said 84-90 cherokees. Is there different speedo ratios? My plan was to swap my Mph gauge with my original miles into the other cluster then i should be fine right??

Not two ratios, but two types of attachments for the speedometer cable to the speedo head. The early type was from 1984 thru 1986, the later type was 1987 thru 1990. After 1990 the speedo is electric.

I still think the change may have been in mid-year 1987 rather than a clean 1986/1987 break, but I haven't been able to verify that.
