AmJay
Thanks for the welcome. I probably should have left this in the pub, so I'm quickly asking a tech question... I have a short tail shaft AW4 trans and plan to convert the MJ to 4WD once I get an axle, front driveshaft and xfer case. Do I need a different rear driveshaft or does the 2WD shaft work? I'd like full 4wd instead of the part time 4wd that my XJ has. What's the right xfer case?
MJ300
You'd want the NP242 for the full time 4wd. All MJ's came with the NP231 so you'd have to find one out of an XJ and swap it in. As for the rear driveshaft, I don't know why you couldn't use the old one, but I'm not really sure on that one...I'll let some more experienced people answer that one. :rotf:
Pete M
2wd shafts are way too long for 4wd use, but it's easy to have a shop cut it down to the proper length.
mvusse
Also a transfer case will not bolt up to a 2wd transmission.

It not just as simple to remove the tail shaft housing, the shaft it's self will not work, to long. You'll need to replace the AW4 with a 4wd transmission. Also.......when your looking for transfer cases, from '87 - '90 will be a 21 spline shaft, and '91-'95 will have 23 spline. Your more likely to find a 23 spline case, just more of them out there. Your best looking for the complete combination of the AW4 and 242, or 231(part time) Your existing 2wd drive shaft will work, as Pete said, just have it cut down, and re-balanced.
