cluster swap/speedo cable?

Recommended Posts

I have been reading through the posts and have not been able to find the specifc answer to my cable and tach question. I have a 1986 2.5 MJ 4spd and swapping in a 90? full guage cluster from a cherokee. The speedo cable on my MJ is the guage mounted spring clip and the newer cluster must use the cable "squeeze" type fastener. Is the squeeze type cable still available for purchase and can it simply be swapped in exchange of my non-cruise single cable AX4 4-speed? If so can somone tell me a part number or vehicle model I need to purchase from? If it is no longer available or cannot be simply swapped, do I simply need to retrofit the spring clip or make a fasting system to use my existing cable with the newer style head? I could not tell from looking at it if the existing cable would fit deep enough on the other style shaft or if the internal drive cable was the same size? Furthermore I am a little confused on if the tach will need adjusted or will work if the cluster was from a 6 cyclinder. I did find the adjustable "pot" behind the guage but did not know if it needed to be adjusted or not. I assume that if it does need adjusted it will be a matter of trial and error since it cannot be adjusted while the guage is in place. Thanks for anyone who can steer me in the right direction and provide any help!

To help the speedo cable issue, I believe 84-86 use the metal speedo connector. 87-90 is the plastic style. The speedos are not swappable between clusters. They mount differently, but I have an '84 FULL GAUGE cluster that will work in your '86 (just need to recalibrate your tach)

"Just" need to recalibrate the tach?

How do you do that for that year cluster?

Not possible with the '84-'86 cluster. There is no provision for trimming the potentiometer.

JPcounty69,

Sounds like your best bet would be either a trip to the junkyard to locate the correct 87-90 speedo cable (cheapest) or online/parts store.

The tach on your '90 cluster is adjustable. See below link. Lots of helpful info and helpful people at naxja.org. Good luck.
