First post! I am looking for a recomendation for lift kits!

I have been surfing the internet and it seems like there is a lot of different kits for lifting the suspension of my Comanche! I would like to run on 31x10.5 r15's. I am not sure exactly what my equipment translates into your jargon, but i have a 1991 Comanche 4.0l with DGB 4 speed A/T (AW4), 3.55 Axle Ratio, 175MM rear axle (not sure what that means), and a Dana M30/181MM Front Axle! The truck has just over 48,000km (30,000 miles) on it! I bought it with a meyer plow and the front end was damaged and I had it repaired. Sorry for the long winded message, but I would like to do a proper job on this truck, without sinking my entire net worth into it!

I wanted to put the Jeep Up-Country Suspension but Chrysler no longer has the parts! I would prefer to lift it with a proper kit! I really wish I knew more about this topic so I don't appear to be a total Dolt!

Thank you for the suggestion! Do u off-road with your truck much? I was originally thinking 3"-4". I guess I should know better what I want before I post! I want to have good off-road capability and I am keeping the plow. I think that I am becoming more comfortable with the thought of a 4"-6" lift! I looked on the Skyjacker Site and they say......

 

Lift Height: What's right for you?

(1"-3") Mild Lifts: 1-3 inch lifts are for the daily driven vehicle that will spend most of it's time on the road. Great for getting over curbs and other small obstacles that most vehicles can't.

(4"-6") Medium Lifts: These are the most commonly purchased lifts. 4-6 inches of extra clearance will allow your vehicle to handle more off road time and still be streetable.

(7"-up) Extreme Lifts: Extreme lifts are exactly that. Go anywhere you want and get the extra looks from the guys with mild lifts.

 

So maybe a 4"-6" lift??? Will that still work with a plow? and does anyone else have any suggestions to a manufacturer of lift kits? Looks like skyjacker only makes a 3" fro the MJ!

If you want to keep the plow, then you really don't want to go over a 3" lift, other wise, you'll need to lower the undercarriage for the plow, as you'll loose the contact angle of the mold board, besides having the blade 'dig' into what ever your plowing on, and causing a lot of strain on the 'A' frame, and pushing the front of the truck up, loosing traction.

 

Other wise, I don't know anything about lifts.........

 

Plows........I know. The Myers 2 meter plow was a OEM plow for the MJ's, and a true OEM would have the bumper mounted to the outer side of the upper bracket, with the electric pump (E47) mounted just above the bumper

The Up Country suspension rides 1" (25mm) higher than standard. I have a 2000 Cherokee with Up Country. I pulled the codes off the coil springs and took them to the dealer. They are the exact same springs as a ZJ (Grand Cherokee) V8, so you can easily source them from a junkyard.

 

FYI, if you have OEM Jeep rims you can run 31x10.50-15 tires with NO lift. So in reality, more than likely all you need is enough to raise the front enough to compensate for the weight of the plow frame. The ZJ front coils will probably do that, possibly with the addition of 3/4-inch (not 2-inch) spacers if the V8 springs alone aren't enough.

rusty's.com pictures of customers rigs with their products. They also list what tires, drive train that the customers are running. Rusty's has a 4.5" spring over rear axle kit or spring pack for spring under rear they also have a 6.5" and 8" . I have 31x10.5 on r15 with no lift and it limits travel a bit. I'm going with the 4.5" once i drop the dana 44 in the rear and have enough for the lift. :typing:

How does running 31s in any way limit suspension travel? The tires fit inside the stock fenders and flares, and you don't have to extend the bump stops. I can't think of any way it COULD limit suspension travel. I ran 31s on my MJ after I took off the lift, and I'm currently running the 31s on my '88 Cherokee, which has smaller rear wheel arches than the MJ. There is no reduction in suspension travel.

If youre going to go with 4-6" of lift, you will either need to do a spring over axle conversion to the rear, or get new springs that have the proper arch to lift that much and be originally spring under axle. But like previous posters said, that would be too much to keep your plow workable. And also as previous posters have said STAY AWAY FROM RUSTYS.... they are nothing but junk and have a horrible reputaion. A milder lift sounds more like what you need, and ZJ, or Grand Cherokee 1993-1998 V8 front springs would be perfect for your situation. :agree: You will need a stronger set of coils in the front to support a plow, and 31 inch tires will run on a stock suspension with stock wheels. In your case, I would look for a set of used ZJ coils.

And i do get some fender rub with my 31s, but this maybe due to the off set of the rim compared to stock rims??

 

 

Absolutely. A small bump in height will help, but probably not totally eliminate the rubbing on the flares.

I didnt know rusty's had a bad rep. lol maybe i need to rethink their lift. And i do get some fender rub with my 31s, but this maybe due to the off set of the rim compared to stock rims??

Yep -- the rubbing is because aftermarket rims sit farther out than OEM Jeep rims. Sorry -- I though you had written that you were on Jeep rims, but I guess I made that up. The only way lift will eliminate the rubbing is if you also extend the bump stops to prevent the suspension from working.

 

It'll be a LOT cheaper to pick up a set of used Jeep rims than any lift kit. They can come off any Comanche, Cherokee, YJ or TJ Wrangler, or ZJ (93-98) Grand Cherokee.

Thanks for helping me thru my decision process! The muddy mind is getting clearer! The Rear looks a lot higher than the front, I think the front is tired! So I am going to put the ZJ suspension in the front and go from there! I appreciate all the feedback from everyone! image_209027.gif

To compare to stock specs, measure from the center of the wheel/axle/hub straight up to the lower edge of the flares. In the front, "stock" height should be 17-1/2". In the rear, it should be about 20 to 20-1/2".

Thank you for the warm welcome, and all the great suggestions, I appreciate all the replies! based on the feedback I have so far, my instincts are telling me to freshen up the front suspension with ZJ up-country suspension, see if i need to re-arch, or maybe an additional leaf in the rear, and put the 31's on her! I am frustrated with how low the plow mount is, but I guess it is what it is! I am still opened minded so any other ideas I would love to hear them!!! 8)
