Although the brake works well, when it is applied, any slight movement causes the pedal to realease. It appears the rivet/pivot for the pedal has too much play. Can it be repaired? Has anyone converted the Comanche pedal for a Cherokee hand lever and how involved is it? It seems to me that the hand lever would be more versatile. glundblad Posted October 31, 2009 Share Posted October 31, 2009 I needed to replace my parking brake as well. I was unable to find anywhere where you could tear that thing apart and fix it. It needed to be replaced. I think the teeth wear out. You will need to find a replacement at a JY. It is a fairly easy job as long as you are "plyable". jiffyjet2 Posted October 31, 2009 Author Share Posted October 31, 2009 Actually, I picked up a used one from somewhere on the internet...and it's sloppier than the one that's in it. I guess I need to figure out a way to rebuild the pivot shaft. New assembly is not available. My clutch and brake pedals are sloppy too, but those parts are easier to deal with. Fortunately I found a parking brake assembly from a MJ with an automatic transmission. 3 bolts hold the assembly in place-although you do need to be very flexibile to get in there. jimoshel Posted November 3, 2009 Share Posted November 3, 2009 If the teeth are worn they can be built up with weld. More trouble than it's worth. If it's just the pivot, drill out the rivet, make sure everything is centered,drill out the hole in both the mount and gear plate to a size where the hole is even and use a bolt. Make sure the moving part is on the bolt shoulder and not the thread. Actually there are so many YJ,in the JY it's easier to just replace it.
