Jakeman17
So I got my oil change like 3-4 weeks ago and i am at the add line already. So i bought some oil to add. There are no puddles of oil left on ground or anything i thought about doing a dye test to see if it is leaking or where?? or Is there something else i should/could do? 87Warrior
My truck will burn/leak a quart of oil every two months. Its just what these old 4.0's do. What type of oil are you running? Maybe you can try something a tad thicker to slow it down? If you are using synthetic, try dino oil.
Pete M
is there oil on your exhaust crossover pipe?
veritas4156
A lot of shops are full of idiots. 5 quarts is a standard oil change. 4.0s take 6. Happens to my friend every time no matter where he goes. He finally started doing his own oil changes because he got tired of it.

Eagle
You don't measure oil consumption by time, you measure it by miles. How many miles did you drive in that time, and at what speeds?
Jakeman17
i drive mainly highway so i average probably 45-60MPH that was probably about 1000 miles
Jakeman17
i added about 2.5 Qts
Pete M
sounds like a rear main seal leak to me. most of the oil would be pushed out while on the throttle and then would drip down and spray back on the exhaust and undercarriage.
Jakeman17
i will look when i go out to garage in little bit
Geonovast
And if it's really bad, it'll smoke everywhere, coat the entire underside of the truck, rear bumper, and tailgate.

mvusse
Built in rust proofing :D Also check your air filter. If you have bad blow by, it will be oil soaked. A plugged up PCV orifice will make it worse and is quite common. Valve cover leak near the fire wall is also quite common and can look like a rear main seal leak. If you were at the add mark, it would have needed 1 quart. 1 quart over 1000 miles is not too bad. 2.5 is.

Dave Stark
There are only so many places for your oil to go. With no (obvious) signs of leaking & no smoke i would check the antifreeze. Is the color normal bright green, or does it have a black film on top? Are you "making" fluid without adding any? This is a common occurrence on engines with aluminum head & cast iron blocks, i would think it wouldn't happen much on our 4.0's since head & block are both cast iron, but stranger things have happened. :dunno: BTW, Most conditions other than a leak will cause smoke, so make sure you check that thing very good before jumping to conclusions. Pete M
I lost a ton of oil with a bad rear main and my undercarriage didn't look any worse than normal (had a small leak for years). No smoke either.
Geonovast
When mine got BAD, I was losing a quart about every 40-50 miles.
Dave Stark
Mine is bad now, but strangely it only leaks right after i shut the engine off.
