wastedtalent
Ok, I've done a lot of searching on this issue. I picked up an '87 manche 2.5l 2x4 for $350. Obviously the truck is not mint! that's why I bought it. I had to replace the drive belt on site before I could even get it out of there. The thing leaks coolant... not just a little bit but A lot! the reservoir is full but the rad is empty and when I try to fill it, fluid spills out from around the bell housing. Every visible plug is still holding solid. Is there a plug that I can only get at by removing the tranny?
mjeff87
There's one in the back of the head above the bell, and yes, there is one in the back of the block. You have to pull the tranny and flywheel to access it. Jeff

I figured I would have to pull the tranny and flywheel. I haven't found too much info on this particular issue. It must not be a very common. Seems how I'm already halfway there, is there anything else I should inspect/fix while I have it torn down?
HOrnbrod
For one thing, replace all the freeze plugs. If one goes bad (if that's where your coolant leak is), the others usually aren't far behind. Use the brass ones. http://gojeep.willyshotrod.com/HowtoWelshPlugs1.htm
mjeff87
R&R the clutch while you have it all apart if you want to. Also, the rear main seal in a 2.5 is a one-piece deal (unlike the 2 pc one on a 4.0).....I'd suggest replacing it while you have the flywheel off. It only costs about $5 :D Check the other welch plugs as well on the side of the block. Jeff edit: Don beat me to it.....
Geonovast
Don't forget the possibility of a blown headgasket. It is possible for it to blow out between the coolant valley and the end of the block, so it won't get into the cylinders or oil and affect how the motor runs. If it ends up not being the freeze plug, at least head gaskets aren't that bad to do.
