I need help with my 87 2.5l comanche, when I turn the key to start the engine, the fuel pump runs, but the starter and spark plugs don't work, we tried to push start it and that didn't work, I jumped the starter and it spun the motor but it didn't fire, then took a volt meter and the plugs have power the relays have power 20230824_152454.mp4
  2. First post to the club, but a frequent user of the great advice you guys offer. Having a crank issue with a 91 4.0 Have power, but as soon as I turn the key completely to ignition I hear one click coming from the starter, the starter is trying to engage but then I lose all power and Can not keep trying to crank until I disconnect the battery and the reconnect to have the same thing happen. Things I’ve checked and or replaced: Starter Starter wires Grounds Ignition switch nss (completely replaced) all relays and fuses battery (used multiple different batteries to be sure) battery terminals and negative and positive terminal clamps radio and speakers (checking for shorts) Fuel pump ballast resistor map sensor and probably a few others that I’m forgetting Probably have about 25 hours in to this problem and I’m at a complete loss. Maybe I messed something up along the way so feel free to give any knowledge of common mistakes made during install or my checks along the way. I hope what I’m trying to say is clear and if not I can clarify

  4. 1988 Jeep Comanche 4.0 AW4: My truck died abruptly in the middle of traffic yesterday morning and then would not fire no matter how much I cranked it over. After work, I went to Autobone and bought a new crankshaft position sensor (Per my research it appears as though I should have went to the dealership instead and bought an OEM sensor which is what I may end up doing.) After installing the new sensor my truck fired up instantly. I took it once around the block and then figured all was well. Today, I drove my truck to work and it started miss-firing, jerking, sputtering and wanting to die when idling. I had to keep my foot on the gas so it wouldn't conk out. I have a Renix Engine Management unit plugged in and I noticed the ignition timing was sporadic, jumping from 14 to 20 degrees and every number in between when idling at red lights. Does this sound like a bad sensor out of the box? Did I get boned by Autobone?
  5. Ignition Cylinder Problem: So when I bought my 88 MJ, the ignition was stuck in the on position. Truck came with a new cylinder, so I had a guy put it in for me. Problems: 1. After getting the ignition installed and the steering column mostly installed, the key became stuck in the off position. It would release but not move forward. He took it all apart again. Got it moving, put column back together. I moved the key into on position and then off, and now I got the ignition stuck in off position again. 2. The ignition seems to have no resistance in the start position. no spring to it. It feels as though it is just like turning key to on position. No spring feel from start to on. Now I do not have a battery in the truck, and have not made an attempt to start the vehicle since I bought it. Its not quite ready, Electrical fixes needed. But I will be making this attempt soon and I really need to solve this lock cylinder issue. Any ideas thoughts? Always appreciated, Ant
  6. Hi guys, I have a 1987 Jeeep Comanche 4.0. The other day my Comanche would not start or crank. I took off the started, took it in, and I was told it was in bad shape. Got a new one, placed it back in, and then it was a no go as well. I was very certain that it was the starter since they tested the old one and it failed. I then replaced the starter relay and that didn't work as well. So then I went under the truck, went to the starter, and wired together the positive outlet to what I believe is the solenoid outlet? And then the truck started. So I don't no where else I could look since it won't start through the key ignition but will if i do it manually under the starter. Any ideas? Thank you very much.
  7. Hello, unfortunately i am posting on here sooner than i intended. Tonight i picked up a 1988 MJ Pioneer, 4.0, 4X4, Manual, 114K Miles. About 50 miles into my 100 mile trip home, cruising along at 65mph, the engine completely died. There was no sputter or signs of charging system issues prior to the issue. I put the clutch in while still rolling and the engine did not crank, or have any sign of life. My headlights and dash lights did stay on the entire time. On the side of the highway i attempted to start the engine multiple times, but nothing moved, no sounds from the starter, solenoid, or fuel pump. Now for the history. The previous owner replaced the lock cylinder after someone busted the old one trying to steal the vehicle. He replaced it with a cylinder fromm a S-10 which i believe is a proper fitment. My theory is that there is a loose connection at the ignition switch. This would cause the system to act as though the key is not being turned at all. Unfortunately i am not too familiar with Comanches yet. I plan on checking fuses tomorrow night, then working my way through the wiring. I hoping the knowledge base here will help put me on the right path to sorting out this issue. Nothing like a $250 tow bill introduction into Jeep ownership, Haha. :)
  8. Hey guys, I’m having trouble tracking down an engine turnover problem. A few days ago I turned the ignition and got nothing, dead nothing. I was in a parking lot with no tools (of course). My positive battery cable was loose so I wiggled it and few other things, it started so I tightened it at home and had no more problems. Until this morning when needing to go to work (of course). I could get it to try to turn over, the starter was working but it was not starting. Then it would only engage the starter every 4th or 5th time turning the key over. Completely unresponsive, not even a click on the in-betweens, with the exception of the sound of something electrical like a solenoid spitting its dying breath. Got a ride to work, but I thought I would post while at work so I might have a clue when I go home and try to work on it. So the big questions for me are, does my 88 Comanche have the kind of starter with the solenoid built into the starter? I replaced the starter about 8 yrs ago, so it’s not all that old. Also, does my truck have a voltage regulator in between the battery and the starter like my cars from the 70's had? My battery is only a few months old too. Of course, first off I will try jumping it when I get home, and I don't mean with a baseball bat. My gut tells me it’s not the battery, but I did eat spicy food for breakfast…. I had a feeling my starter was about to go and yesterday, it happened. thank God I was home. it took me an hour to find one on Oreilly's website, pull mine, call a friend, get it tested and buy a new one, go get groceries for dinner, and reinstall. love those 4.0's! however, when I went to start it this time, I got a click and then lost all power. please help. waiting for rain to stop so I can start checking fuses, relays and wires. the complete loss of power has me a little lost though. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
  10. Alright guys, Sorry for the new thread but I tried searching and I couldn't yield any results. I changed the RMS and Oil pan gasket yesterday (what a PITA) but I didn't try to start it being I wanted to let the RTV set fully. I just power washed it so I could make sure there was no leaks. I go to start it and I only get one "click" or "thump" when I turn the key. I cleaned the battery connections and whacked the starter but it's still a no go. Is this a water in a place where water shouldn't be situation? I did my best not to get the distributor but there are those group of wires towards the firewall that got wet. I'll update my profile(if that's possible) after this post. I gotta get this beat up and going for work tomorrow morning. Edit: Couldn't find Jeep information. Edit 2: Got it figured out. It ended up being the starter after all. The plastic cap that holds the studs on the solenoid was moving out towards the front of the Jeep which wasn't allowing the starter to do its job. 1988. 4.0 auto trans Stock running gear
