  1. Hey guys I’m new to the forum and I’m not sure I understand how to use it I tried looking this up but the first like 10 pages don’t show what I’m looking for and I got too lazy to keep scrolling so apologize for that. i picked up a 89 Comanche about a month ago it’s got the 4.0 with the ax15 it’s 2 wheel drive and so far I’ve picked up a Dana 30 at a local junk yard I’m wanting to know what else I will need I’m having trouble finding an AX15 that’s 4x4 or will my transmission work? I’ve found a 231 transfer case and I know I’ll need the linkage and drive shaft? Am I missing anything or is there a better way or what way would you do it? All opinions are welcome I should also mention this is my very 1st Jeep and I’ve only had about a month of research so tips and tricks are welcome.i forgot to mention my blinkers won’t work with my lights on?? I’ve changed the 2 front sockets and the rear passenger and when I push the blinker button with the lights on my hazards come on????
  2. I've owned this truck for a couple years now, but never got around to posting, so here goes... This is Amelia, my 1988 SWB 4WD Pioneer. I picked her up in Tiger, GA with no visible rot and only minor surface rust. She had around 130k miles on the original 4.0 and BA10/5, and appeared to have sat under a tree for a while. Something special about this truck (that I found out months later) is that the original Vehicle Building Order page was still stuck to the inside of the driver's door panel. 30 years in Georgia humidity somehow weren't able to destroy it, and it's a special piece of this truck's history. Since purchasing, I've already changed, updated, and fixed a bunch of things, and will post some backdated updates as I have time. My goal is to restore to a factory-level, with small upgrades that I would have ordered if I bought this truck new off the line. In the meantime, I've enjoyed driving her around, playing in the garage, and researching what I'm planning to do.
  3. Hi all! I wanted to start a build thread for the 4.0 stroker build that I've started to get input and advice as I'm going along. I'm learning as I go and it would make me feel a lot more comfortable if people with more experience looked through what I'm doin. My intended use for the truck is a dd, something with more power and just to make it really really cool. So getting into it.... Starting with a 1989 MJ with a tired 4.0 with a blown head gasket and high oil pressure. 5 speed to a ford 8.8 in back. The motor is completely ready to come out at the moment, gonna pull it in a few days. Right now I'm thinking ill do away with the whole old motor completely and get a HO head and an NVH block (plenty of XJs in nearby junkyards to look through). HO head over edlebrock because of the price. For the stroker part of it I'm gonna do the 4.2L crank and rod swap. I'm aware that ill need dished pistons with a different pin height for this setup. Probably gonna bore it to 30 or 40 over. Gonna need my engineering school friends to help me with compression ratio maths lol. Valvetrain/airflow: I'm gonna have my head ported and MAYBE do some LS valves to let it breathe, and a cam to make it breathe. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about cams but that sh*t is sooo confusing so any advise on resources to help pick a cam would be much appreciated. Ill do hydraulic lifters with the little oil hole in them and roller rockers. Port matched HO intake with a bigger throttle body and 1 inch spacer under the TB. 24# injectors. As for wiring and electrics I think I'm leaning towards replacing the whole Renix harness with the HO harness instead of getting my current wiring to work. If I'm gonna put this much into the performance of my motor I want the best wiring I can to use all its available potential. Something I am curious about is whether I should stick with the distributor or go with the coils from the early 2000s XJs, any input on this would be greatly appreciated. Other miscellaneous things: -high flow water pump with high flow thermostat and housing -high flow oil pump with a oil warmer/cooler box from Hesco Other things I'm thinking about: -could I get any more performance with a custom intake manifold or is the stock HO intake that's been port matched pretty optimal? -electric vacuum pump to tidy things up in the engine bay and not have to worry about low pressure at idle? -is a cold air intake a good idea or is that stupid? -oil catch can? Ill be posting more updates as I figure more stuff out and progress in the build. IMG_0239.HEIC IMG_0241.HEIC
  4. Hello I'd like to introduce my newly acquired 1988 Comanche, some of you might recognize her , I had already purchased her once a few years ago and then sold it and regretted it and now I have bought her back for a whopping 900$. She runs and drives beautifully , starter seems sluggish thought and she had non functioning hazards and stop lights but that has been fixed. Plans for this is to just get her running even better , going through all of cruisers tips , and also get her repainted and swap the front end to chrome and just drive and enjoy it. This one is equipped with the 4.0 , 5 speed Dana 35
  5. 1988 Jeep Comanche Pioneer 4.0 auto 4x4 long bed 244,500 miles. I’ve been driving it daily and rescued it from a guy that never did anything with it. It fired right up after sitting for over a year and the body and unibody are in great shape. I couldn’t pass it up. It has a high pinion Dana 30 front, Dana 35 rear, 231, aw4
  6. Picked this 2002 grand Cherokee up over a month ago to replace my wife’s totaled Compass. I’m just planing on fixing the little things that are wrong with it and update it with a more modern radio and just enjoy it . It’s at 166k. It’s a limited with quadradrive 4x4. It has the front and rear limited slips , skid plates , front and rear tow hooks , and my favorite part is that’s it’s a 4.0 .
  7. Hey all, i'm the proud new owner of this '89 MJ. It came with some issues as most older jeeps do. First order of business, clean the throttle body and iac. Trying to eliminate the vacuum leak, which is massive. Kicking out a loud whoosh when i step on the gas pedal, limiting my top speed to 35 mph. PO installed an electric fan to help with overheating, seems to work well, keeping temps at 220 F if i can trust the thermostat. So i'll be under the hood for a while this week. The forum articles on vacuum leaks are helpful. Also i'll be looking for a new flexplate, mine is cracked. Any advice/info on sourcing a new one will be appreciated!
  8. Anyone know where I can get a egr valve I bought one off rock auto it was wrong. No napa, O Reilly's, auto zone, napa....... I can't find one. Please help
  9. Please help, I've got engine oil in clutch reservoir (?) I recently became a proud owner of a 4WD 89 Comanche 4.0 paired to a Peugeot transmission, but the previous owner lost the clutch while delivering it to my house, making clutch-less shifts. We added fluid to the master cylinder reservoir, pumped the clutch, and the fluid turned black. Now the clutch has some pressure, but quickly loses it as it drips from where the rear main seal would be. The seller mentioned that the rear-main seal was most likely bad, and it explained the oil leak that I saw when I test drove it. The master cylinder doesn't seem to be leaking, nor does the line leading to the internally located slave cylinder. The engine oil is pitch black and very low. My best guess is that the slave cylinder blew and is ingesting oil from the rear-main seal leak? Has anyone encountered this? I tried to find videos on how to replace the slave cylinder when it's internally mounted, but had no luck. I wanted to get it running myself so I could plan out what the build would be, but now I'm wondering if I should send it out, swap to an AX15, replace the clutch, and convert to an external slave cylinder. Any advice is much appreciated
  10. Hello all, I’m new to the Comanche cluband am building my first MJ. I have a 98 XJ that I wheeled and drove since 2003. I recently totaled it and picked up a 1986 MJ for $600. Replacing the floor pan now, I plan on doing a Rusty’s long arm as well as swap the 4.0 and AW4 from the XJ. The MJ had a 2.8 with a manual, not sure if I need to cut the cross member mounts off the unibody for clearance with the trans or fitment with the long arm crossmember. Has anybody ran into this before on one of these awesome Jeeps? I really have been getting a lot out of all the experience posted on this forum. Cheers!
  11. Finally posting my truck after about a year and a half of ownership, I purchased 2 Comanches from a guy in Woodstock, Illinois. One 86 red 2.5, 2wd, dana 35 long bed and one 86 silver 2.8, manual, 4wd, long bed. All I knew about the silver truck was that it supposedly had a wiring/ground issue and was taken apart and prepared to be parted out. They were both purchased for $500, as well as an additional $150 for a stock pile of extra parts. Both trucks had rust on rockers/bed ect., but at 500 for the pair I couldn't say no. They mark the 4th and 5th Jeeps that I've owned at 20 years old, and the MJ is quickly becoming one of my favorite chassis. When purchased the red truck ran and drove but smoked white out of the tailpipe bad, it sat for awhile and i replaced the head gasket and general top end gaskets, including a check on the head, after it was back together it ran better but smoked even more. I sold it on craigslist for $450 after it sat in the driveway for awhile. I purchased a third MJ around 2 months after the first two, I paid $250 for an 89 Pioneer lwb 4.0 4wd with no motor and the trans in the back, floors were rusted but I wanted a specific set of parts for the other truck. The silver Comanche was missing a drivers side floor, no gas tank, no dash, no interior, no steering column, a broken shock mount on the rear bed frame, and a broken leaf spring plate shock mount. The 89 truck had a burgandy interior with bench seat, a column,a long bed camper shell and the general small parts I needed for the other truck. I took a couple of months getting the parts I needed and then cut up the 89 Pioneer and hauled it to the scrap yard. It left me with all the parts I would need and I got to work patching the floor on the truck. An amazon floor pan didn't fit precisely, but I made it work, I put in a brand new grey carpet that matched a flawless grey dash. The burgandy bench seat followed after I had refinished the bench mounts. I wired the necessities into the dash and discovered that signal was going to and from the column with the key but would not start. I rewired the starter relay to a push button start, replaced a broken engine ground strap and the ignition coil, mounted the fuel tank with new straps and it started and ran alright for less than a $1000 invested. After that I installed a 4.5 inch zone lift and put a set of rubicon rims from a jk on that i picked up on craigslist. Redid the headliner too, new radio with new speakers all around, smoker windows waiting to be installed, and a lund visor to top it off. Shes registered, but not insured, driven alright on the road so far except for a scare or two. Just finished up the Ares Fab DIY Front XJ bumper as they're local to me and installed a harbor freight 9,000 pound winch. Hoping to take her on a lot of great adventures this summer and many after that. Pics follow
  12. Finally joined the Comanche club a couple months ago. This is a 1988 4.0 5-speed 4x4 with 180k on the odo. Exactly, what I had been searching for... a shortbed, 4wd, manual with a 4.0. Currently, I am wrestling with some electrical gremlins and goblins. Learning Renix has been interesting, to say the least. Not on the road just yet but, once I am finished sorting out the wiring it should be good to go.
  13. Just bought an 87 short bed, 4.0 2 WD a few months ago. Originally white and sold new in CA. Its been repainted factory red sometime in its life and has the original tan vinyl bench. Bought it from a young guy in K.C. and had it shipped to Ohio. I think it was parked for awhile because the original 5 spd tranny was bad. The guy I bought it from swapped in an AX15 with help from his dad. He also put in a gauge cluster with the tach. I wanted a 2WD because I'm only going to drive it in fair weather. Pretty sure it only has 102k on it. Previously I owned a 91 Cherokee Laredo and drove it daily for 8 yrs. Looking forward to making some improvements as I get more into it. I've only put about 10 miles on it so far as I had to get rid of a Ford Ranger first so I could transfer the plate. Only the 2nd Ford I've owned and it just wasn't me. The other was a Model A.
  14. Hey everybody, my name is Dan, and this is my first post. I've been lurking a while now and I have to say, this is one of the best forums I've ever come across. The vast amounts of information and inspiration are very helpful to new owners. And there is a shocking abscence of bickering, oversensitivity and internet tough guys that seem all too common on other forums. With that said, it's about damn time to start talkn bout Comanches... I've had my eye on getting a Comanche for a couple years. Started seriously looking last January, had a few slip through my fingers, but finally got one in March. Got lucky and found an 87 SWB 2wd 5spd with just under 130k and completely stock. Picked it up for $1800. ;) It had some water leaks(carpet was wet) and needed tires. When I went to leave after sealing the deal, the starter stopped working. So the seller gave me back $60 for a new starter. So for the next day I had to give the starter some love taps to get her going. Turned out to be a loose signal wire. Score! Also, I forgot how much I like driving midsize trucks with a manual trans. Here she is a few days after I bought her: Unfortunately, I didn't take any pics before I started wrenching on it.. Was just really excited. I installed a tool box that I had on a couple other trucks and bought those wheels/tires on craigslist. $70 with pretty worn BFG A/Ts. But they weren't dry rotted like the tires that came on the truck, so that's something.
  15. So last July I bought a house and as an incentive he was going to include his broken down 89 Comanche.(I was going to buy it regardless but I like small trucks always like the 4.0) Anyways what I got is a 89 2WD 4.0 Manual truck. I would like to get it up and running first and then maybe do a 4WD conversion and keep it a stick. I might do a slight 2-4 inch raise seeing as it'll be a trail/dump runner so need to keep it street legal. I have a little automotive experience but not much in the ways of axels/transmissions and such. I did it get where I can drive it. Had to replace bad starter and bad and wrong battery (probably what fried the starter). So it cranks every time now. I do have an issue on occasion with the transmission not wanting to go into gear opinions? Also I have a brake issue they work but the pedal is pretty much at the firewall and it isn't the quickest response. I tried bleeding them but no air bubbles and passenger front has a stripped bleeder screw that I will have to deal with as well. The brake fluid has not dropped so I don't think there is a leak but again not sure. Also runs a bit hot after shut off I heard this is common and only real way to fix is to convert to open system (already replaced tank, pump, and thermostat, helped a lot) Any help would be greatly appreciated also I will post pictures and video of it running as soon as I get home.
  16. So I'm trying to find out why my truck keeps dying. I jumped it off, let the vehicles run for several minutes, took the jumper cables off, and it runs for about a minute, then dies. I also noticed its idling weird. it will idle high, then get really low, then sound like someone is tapping the gas pedal. It will die soon after that. The alternator is brand new, I tried 3 different batteries (can't find my multimeter at the moment to make sure they are good, they are all about 5 years old). So I think I have it narrowed down to the battery, or a connection to the alternator. In the morning I am going to find my multimeter, and recheck the alternator connections. Am I missing something else that it could be? Would a bad battery make it idle like that?
  17. Hi Everyone, This is my 1st post. I picked up this Comanche a little over a month ago(My first!). It is a 88 2wd/lwb Pioneer 4.0/Aw4. 222k on the clock. The original owner purchased it in Missouri. Lived there for a few years before moving to Florida. Then recently made its way to Michigan to his granddaughter here. When once she realized the amount of work needed. She sold it to the shop she took it too. And I purchased it from them. It still has most of it's original window sticker. it is 100% rust free. It has been repainted at some point. The AW4 was rebuilt about 18k miles ago. The shop I bought it from redid the top end due to a bad HG. all new Cooling system. Still the closed-loop. full tune-up. What I've done: replaced the self-destructing balancer, Timing set, TPS, Starter, Starter relay, Cables, re-freshed grounds. added a ground to the core support from the battery, and I left the body to engine ground strap. but added with it a cable from the body to a intake heat shield bolt. Now here is the issue, which has been present since before I purchased it...It starts just fine when it has sat for several hours(overnight, or while I'm at work. Once it is warm. It struggles to start. It will start cranking strong, then it will slow down like the battery is almost dead, and then pick back up, slow down etc. Sometimes it will start while doing this. Or it may take me a couple tries until it lights off. Then sometimes it will fire up with no issues. But that is very rare. I checked the timing, seems to be where it should be. Battery was load tested and passed. The Alt. charges as it should...14.4v. I jumpered the ballast resistor, no difference. Fuel pressure is at 30-31psi w/ vac. 37-38 w/out vac. the vac line to reg. does smell of fuel, but is not damp. I also disconnected the A/C Clutch and no change. When it happens. There is a large voltage drop when it slows. I've noted with my volt meter on the batt. It will drop to 9v, even 8v when it slows, then voltage will come back up to over 10v when it speeds back up. I've even tried hooking a jump box to it, and still happens. I feel that it is some sort of "Heat Soak" Issue. A buddy mentioned possibly the coil. It does appear to be original. I've lurked on this site and have checked countless others. And haven't seen anyone else having a similar problem. I'll post/link my youtube video so you all can see for yourself what I'm dealing with. https://youtu.be/fAZT_wsADR0 <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/fAZT_wsADR0"frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  18. I have a barebones 88 MJ - 2wd, 2.5L, 4speed, that got one option... power steering. After 204K the engine is done, I'm going to swap the entire driveline from a 1998 Cherokee Classic. Thanks to Alexia's 97-98 swap project for insparation! I'll post pictures along the way and am interested in your tips and feed back. As you can see Cherro was in a front end accident, but the engine seems ok accept for the idler pully etc......
  19. I've had my 87 MJ for a little over 2 years. What was going to be a "simple" upgrade of the rear axle to a Dana 44 (to get me to the Metric Tonne place) has gone totally out of control. The rear is now a Dana 60 and the front a Dana 44. Both geared to 4.56 with a four-link in the front, Hell Creek springs in the rear. The lift is designed for me to be able to run 35s. The original 4.0 l-6 has about 275,000 miles on it and the tranny is the much-loathed 5-speed. I also have an XJ with around the same miles, so I am a fan of the 4.0 I-6 motor. I have found an engine rebuilder locally with a good reputation, and I have also talked with HotWire about a harness, so what's the next step? It's a little weird that I don't do a lot of wheeling, but am building the truck for some travelling I do on some pretty nasty fire roads and often just pairs of ruts that go from A to B. I want to go to an automatic transmission and since I'm already committed to some new drive shafts and want a new motor (which i can spec for any year that will physically fit), I'm looking for recommendations for a particular tranny (with overdrive), transfer case and motor combo and from what years in particular. If you have donor vehicle recommendations, that would be great. i have looked over the forums using some generic search terms, and I apologize in advance if there's something out there with good info that I've missed. Most of the posts I;ve seen so far seem to be focused on swaps that allow the use of existing wiring (with modifications) and sticking with MJ / XJ parts from a similar era. (I do have a line on a very low mileage 4.0 from 2002 that I can use as a back up instead of gong straight to the reman.) Unfortunately my job keeps me hopping about 60 hours a week and it' tough to check out the forums on a frequent basis. (yeah, I know... wha, wah, wah!) Any thoughts you have are welcome.

  21. Okay so I'm going out on a limb on this project. I know its been done in YJ's and TJ's but ive never seen them in an MJ (or XJ for that matter). What I'm wanting to do is swap a 5.2L Magnum out of a 1999 Dodge Durango into my 1991 Jeep Comanche with a 4.0L, AX15, and NP231. I have the chance to buy this donor for $500. Its a 1999 Dodge Durango with a 5.2L, 44RE, and NP242(if i had to guess). As far as getting this motor to fit, that shouldnt be a problem, but the wiring harness and computer will be a different story. Is there anybody out there that can give a little advice on this swap? And if anybody wants to put their negative comments about "thats a waste of time" or "just drop a chevy 350 in it", i don't want to hear it. Hopefully someone can help me here
  22. So for about 3 months now Ive had a ford 8.8 ready to swap in including a new 5.5 inch lift. :doh:I have everything to do the lift and swap and i know how to do it, but i haven't yet because its different gearing then my dana 30 upfront right now and i need a drivable car and 4wd here in the upcoming colder months. But now that i have this 1995 4wd cherokee with a non CAD dana 30, I'm going to pull it out and have it re geared and put that in my comanche. I'm not going to build it up yet because i don't have the money because i started school and can't work as much, but i just want to replace what i should and get the parts to re-gear it. I'm just wondering what i need to buy for a re gearing? thanks. Id like to get the parts so that i can do this ford 8.8 swap, new 5.5 alexia lift and then this dana 30 all in one weekend. BTW I'm not doing it myself, but i just want to have all the parts ready to bring to the shop. also, the shop in town here is cool with bringing in your own parts. . :MJ 1: . (me after swap)
  23. i got my pats vehicle. I got a ax15. I'm taking that out today. I'm going to put all new seals in it and clean it up and then I'm going to swap it in. I need to know all the stuff thats needed for this swap. I got the cross member, shifter, case, and linkage. I have no idea what needs to be changed or bought for this. Thanks all!
  24. I'm interested in buying a project Comanche Jeep. I'm looking to put Dana 60 axles in it and a 4.0L stroker and fresh paint. I have big plans. I need a solid platform. To make my life easier I'd like to start off with a 4.0 engine so I have the wiring harness already and whatnot. I'd like to re-use the stock AX-15 transmission I would like it to be a short bed and if possible it can come factory with 4wd. Also no rust would be a plus. Text me at (631) 806-1839 for any leads, I'm located in Western New York. I don't mind driving within reason to pick one up.
  25. Just purchased my second Comanche, 91 Eliminator shortbed 4x4 4.0 I6 HO, Ax15, and the metric ton package (dana 44!). Bought it for $1000 runs great only 168k on it and all stock. Problem is floorboards and rockers are gone. (Literally holes you can stick your leg through) I have replacements for both those but came across a rotten frame. Leaf spring and shackles are fine just drivers side is rotted up to the brake lines and a pretty decent size hole. Has anyone repaired a unibody? I know you can strengthen them with unibody supports but anyone do something different?
