What's the easiest way to figure out the year of my Truck?

Recommended Posts

Easiest Way?  Check your title documents and registration.

Use this VIN Decoder:  Jeep VIN decoder     It is in the DIY section.

Your truck is an 89 4.0

One/TWO last things:  Please put your location in you Profile.   When you set up a signature, please list your truck's year, engine, etc so we all know what you have and what model you are speaking about.  Thanks,

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to set up a signature, but can't seem to figure it out on Tapatalk. Will have to sign into the website to do it I guess.

The tenth digit of the VIN is the year. But ... the VIN system changed from 1988 to 1989. Explained here:

http://www.allpar.com/mopar/jeep-vin.html

Your VIN is 1 J  7 F T 3 6  L 3 K L 445397

1 = Country of Origin (USA)

J = Make (Jeep Company)

7 = Vehicle Type (Truck)

F = Gross vehicle weight (4,001 - 5,000 pounds)

T = Model Line (my FSM says T is a 2WD Cherokee)

3 = Trim Level (Pioneer)(Another source says Chief)

6 = Body Style (???)

L = Engine (4.0L)

3 = Check Digit

K = Model Year (1989)

L = Assembly Plant (Toledo, Plant #1)

445397 = Serial number

This site makes it easy, but isn't specific as to how they do it: https://www.decodethis.com/vin/1J7FT36L3KL445397

I've looked into three different FSMs and about six web sites. They are NOT all consistent as to what some of the code mean. They do all seem to agree that you have a 1989 Jeep.

Not entirely sure, just finished a SOA 8.25 conversion. Here's a pic of the old axle.42e6a0d758864bfa5353f6178b2c1087.jpg1f9280a49dc07f1dba22985e9d9df416.jpg

I assume it's a Dana 35 because it's a 5 speed manual. Could be wrong though.

Yep, that the turdy-5. So much for the accuracy of the VIN checker...........

Do you possibly have a "Metric Ton" badge on the tailgate?

Nope.

Here's a pic of my rear springs. 3 springs and a helper. Not sure what the Metric Ton package has.
