Bunch of Comanche Questions

Recommended Posts

I figured I'd put a bunch of questions on here rather than making separate threads so it would be easier for me and others to find this information. So I anyone has awnsers pertaining to all this, that would be great! So here it goes.

1. What is the benefit of doing a SYE (slip yoke eliminator) for a NP231? I've heard of it being stronger and helping when lifting you're jeep, but wonder if there are any other benefits?

2. Would would be a better gear ratio to run in a 86 2.5 with a AX-5 with a 3 in lift and 31in tires, 4:56 or 4:88? Mainly would be highway driving and in town. (I live in MO to so there are a lot of hills)

3. If doing a 93 MPI 2.5 swap from a 93 wrangler, does the fuel pump need to be changed to that year model of pump due to it being higher pressure?

4. Anyone know of a good winch for a budget? (Not a piece of crap one but a good tough winch for a good price)

5. Any good recommendations for Bedliner? ( Updates from those who have had Bedliner on theirs and how well it has held up for however long)

6. Will the transmission shifter from a 93 wrangler work on a Comanche even though it's longer? (Have one laying around and was just curious, probably wouldn't do it)

7. Does anyone know where in the heck you can find a new 10 slot grill? Looked everywhere and only find 8 slots. Rock auto had 10 slots, but says they don't anymore.

8. Does anyone have pictures of their on board air systems? Seen people set up in a Cherokee, but not very often in a Comanche.

9. I've asked way to many questions haven't I?

10. Kind of just one of those what if things, but has anyone ever added some boost to a 2.5 and good results? No 4.0 just wonder if someone decided to be the black jeep of the family and boost there 2.5 instead of a 4.0 just to be, well ya know difrent from the other 4.0 jeeps.

11. Has only one ever put the older door panels on 97+ doors?

12. I'm kidding I'm done with the questions. I know if there is one place to go when I have questions its here because you guys have helped me understand this truck for the past 4 and 1/2 years. Any ideas, opinions, (except for swapping In a 4.0 lol) would be greatly appreciated. Everyone has helped me out so much, so thank you to everyone on here!

1. Eliminates the slip yoke, preventing oil loss during a failure. Reduces vibration due to poor driveline angle - this one doesn't really matter with an MJ's mile long driveshaft. SYE is more a short wheel base need, optional for the MJ.

2. 31's around town, 4.88 would get you back to a stock feel. 4.56 would be fine as well ... But not much of a jump from stock to justify cost. But it would be a better highway ratio.

3. Going from an 86 to a 93 motor using MPFI, yeah, grab the whole tank as well. MPFI runs at 30-40psi, you're pushing a whopping 15psi max if TBI and 3-7psi is carb'd.

4. I've had a Runva on my XJ for a few years now, has yet to let me down. It does what a winch does, pulls. Good price, good winch.

1: as mentioned, it's stronger and eliminates the silly factory slip yoke.  drawbacks are you'll need a new shaft.

2: I'd go with 4.88 if I was paying for gear setup.  what axle are you running out back?

4: my buddy has the harbor freight 12k winch and it hasn't failed yet.  for myself I was thinking about getting one of Warn's new VR series winches.

5: avoid rhino and dura and hurc.  they don't seem to last

6: I use a TJ AX-15 shifter in my truck.  doesn't fit quite right but is usable.

8: I use a Co2 tank so no help there.

10: I swear there was a guy fairly recently that was doing that.  maybe he has a build thread.

There arent many who have, but there are some. When well tuned most report the power/torque to feel similar to that of a stock 4.0

I believe Banks makes or did make a bolt on turbo kit for the 2.5 or maybe it was just for the 4.0  :hmm:

I'm definitely for adding a turbo to anything. Just depends how deep your pockets are and how skilled you are at fabrication.

Thank you guys. Ive got more questions

Front axles from a ZJ i understand will fit, but does that mean you need the drive shaft from a ZJ and have it modified to have the same U-Joint on the T-case? (NP 231J)

Azzy's sells the Transfer case shift linkage, says it works for XJ's, but i havent figured out if it works for a AX-5 and 231J?

When swapping in a MPI 2.5 in, do you need to have the throttle cable for that engine (93 Wrangler)? Or Can the TBI 2.5 be modified?

If swapping in actual gauges instead of dummy lights, does the dash harness need to be changed too? I know the senders do. Thats about it.

Does anyone know if there is a stock color code from the silver on ravine wheels?

Is there a link anywhere for removing/ Redoing the fuse box? can't find it anywhere. I know its there. Figured someone might have the link to it.

That should be everything. Ive been trying to get things figured out because I have big plans coming up for this thing soon. Havent driven it in almost a year and it has been killing me. So thank you everyone for helping me out!

Nope. You'll need to replace both the existing oil pressure and temperature switches with sensors if changing to full gauges. No change needed for the harness.
