the electric fan is down...

Recommended Posts

well that`s not good, somehow yesterday after i drove on a bump, i heard something under the hood, so i stopped to look: the electric fan broke off its mountings and the mechanical fan tore it apart... nice

so i drove slowly back home but now i`m not sure if i should keep using the comanche with only the mechanical fan working, what do you guys think?

a lot depends on the state of your system.  if your radiator is practically new and the fan clutch works great and you still have a fan shroud (and you don't live in death valley) then you should be fine.   my liberty has a mech fan and a broken e-fan and I never even noticed it until towing a camper trailer up the mountains on a 100 degree day.  my dakota (also mech fan plus an e fan) is the other way and I need the e-fan to keep the v8 cool while using the AC.

the internet is awash with e-fans that are only $25.  if you go OEM, try to get the later model version with the curved fins.

As long as you aren't overheating anyway, you'll be fine. The electric fan won't make that much difference. Just make sure to replace it with a 95-96 (or if you don't mind splicing connectors) 97+ fans. They're better and quieter. Make sure to check your clutch fan and everything else for damage.

For what it's worth the only time I had my e-fan come on by itself in recent memory was right after I replaced the radiator before filling and bleeding the system completely.

Where are you located? It's the middle of September and we're coming into Winter. The electric fan is a secondary, auxiliary fan. It wasn't even provided on vehicles that didn't have air conditioning and/or the trailer tow prep package. Unless your radiator is in pretty bad shape, I think you'll be fine, at least until the hot part of the summer. Just watch your temperature gauge (which you should be doing anyway).

I live over here in Arkansas where it's 95 and 85% humidity and my mj just has the mechanical fan and runs at about 160 170 degrees.

That's not good. Where's your thermostat? MIA?
What do you mean thatd not good. Right now in arkansas it's not super hop like I described it was during the summer but my MJ has ran at the same temp since I got it. Here's proof of where it runs and this pick was on a really hot day with lots of sitting still in traffic and I have no a.c.: b789abd02e5283673dfeb01622fcce8c.jpg

If you've been running at that temp all this time ... The fan has only been on when the A/C was otherwise it was just added weight along for the ride. It comes on at about 220*F

I would suspect either a thermostat or temp sender issue.

Mine used to run that low of a temp when I threw in the "totally the best" Stant thermostat. Two did that one, after the other 195* thermo's holding 160* steady. Switched to a Motorad failsafe and it's ran at expected Temps since. Should have never switched the Motorad's have never let me down in 20yrs and 7 different vehicles.

Before worrying about your temperature, verify that the gauge is actually reading properly. I have a set of those blue gauges and the temperature gauge reads about 30* lower than actual temperature. When I still had aftermarket senders in my '91 the temp read at least 25* higher than actual temperature. A Mopar sensor agrees with my other measurements. Point an infrared thermometer at the upper radiator hose where it comes out of the thermostat housing. If you had an HO, you could also measure the resistance of the CTS on the thermostat housing and compare it against the resistance chart in the FSM. That's a more accurate sensor in a better spot anyway, and later engines used that sensor for the temp gauge as well.

Mine has been running at 160* for years.  That's after two 'stat changes.  I figured it was the temp sending unit or the gauge.

A cluster swap with diff gauge did not change the temp, thou.

On one really hot day this summer with the AC running, the gauge did creep up close to 200*.  Then I guess the e-fan kicked on and the temp dropped back to the new normal.

Perhaps I will search for a "Motorad" stat.

Edit:

Maybe not. A search of their website does not show retailers in the mid-Atlantic.

According to my 1990 FSM, the Renix fan is supposed to come on at about 190*, so your gauge is probably at least somewhat close to reality. The temp gauge isn't linear, so it's tricky to figure out what it's actually reading sometimes. Mine does about like yours does and I have a Stant thermostat with a CSF 3 core radiator and a 9x11 transmission cooler. If I climb a long hill in overdrive with the A/C running, it almost touches 210 but it goes back down from there.

so the e Fan is not mandatory...

and winter is coming so i guess i`ll be safe for at least 6 months...

Been in Korea, Texas, Maryland, Kansas, and Arizona.....summers and winters.....with just the mechanical fan. No problems. That said, my truck never had A/C nor do I tow.

I'ts not good to run out 4.0s at that low of a temperature. Ideally, it's 195*

mmm i gotta check that

* no temp gauge just a temp light *

$#!&...

Swapping in a full gauge cluster is a good upgrade - easy to do also.
