Help Identify My Transmission

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to check and maybe change my MJ's trans fluid. Was wondering if I could get help identifying my transmission and maybe some reccomendations on the fluid and where the filler plug is. 87 MJ 4.0l 5spd 4x4

This is on the bottom at the back end of the transmission. Don't know if it's anything special or not.

Looks like an AX15.  Did you (or a PO) swap trans?

If the trans case splits front to rear at the top and bottom, then its a BA10/5.  That was what came from the factory.

Your pictures don't look like the BA10

The BA10 coming out for the last time:

That looks to be an internal slave AX15.  As for fluid recommendation, use either Pennzoil SyncroMesh or RedLine MT-90.  What ever you do, DO NOT USE any fluid that is GL-5.  The syncro rings in the AX15 are made of brass, and the level of sulfur in GL-5 fluids will quite literally dissolve the rings over time.

That looks just like the AX-15 in my '89. You can tell by the case that's split laterally (i.e. it has a front half and a back half). Onlyinajeep726's comments about the oil are exactly right. This means you got lucky, since your truck started its life with the Peugeot BA-10/5 (a crappy transmission in comparison to the AX-15) and someone swapped it out with an AX-15. The BA-10/5 also has less pronounced ribs on the case than the AX-15.

The drain plug is on the passenger side bottom of the trans and the fill plug is on the driver side. Both are 15/16" if I'm remembering correctly. Make sure you loosen the fill plug before draining the fluid as they can get seized, and it's best to find out the fill plug won't move or is stripped out before you drain all of the fluid out.

Fill it through the shift tower if you have to...  But yeah, it's always good advice to make sure you can put fluid in before draining fluid out.

It will be tuesday(tomorrow) before I will be able to look at it again but I will check it out. I will post back on what trans it is when I find the fill plug. I found what looks to be the drain plug on the bottom passenger side of the trans when I took the pictures.

First of all, you have a manual transmission.  It has a "flywheel."  A "flex plate" goes with an auto trans.  (Now, off my soap box.)

The flywheel needs to match the engine electronics.  Since both the 87 and 89 are Renix, either fly wheel will work with a Renix engine.  The trans doesn't matter which fly wheel you use.

For the clutch, you should match it to the trans.  I use Rockauto's web site to research part number changes.  For example, i look at the clutch used with an 87 BA10, then look at the clutch for a 90 with an AX15, either an MJ or XJ. The pressure plate and throw out release bearing part #s changed, But the clutch disk and pilot bearing/bushing remain the same.

I was looking is valvoline syncromesh any good. I can't seem to find penzoil sycromesh without ordering it and paying a lot for shipping.

If the Valvoline bottle says "safe for yellow metals" then YES. If the Valvoline bottle says "GL-5" compatible or the like, then NO.

I can not find transmission fluid for the AX5 (same build as the AX15) around home. Thus, I follow Chrysler's recommendation and run a high quality synthetic 10w-30 motor oil. Shifts like butter, is far easier to source and is recommended by Chrysler.

Another vote for synthetic 10w-30 motor oil. My AX15 runs great with it.

Ok any reccomendations on brand and how often to change it. I'm hoping to change it Monday as long as my new fill plug is here by then.

I assume you got the fluid changed already, but I'll still entertain your questions. I use Mobil 1 in the transmission, the same as I use in the motor, and change it every other year because I do not daily drive the truck anymore. I think a yearly change would suffice in a daily driven truck.

I'm just changing it cause I don't know when it was last changed. I'm gonna put valvoline synchromesh in it. Right now I'm fighting my rounded filler plug trying to get it out. Whenever I get a few miles on the valvoline I'll do a small short little post on how well it does.
