Iowamike Posted August 23, 2016 Share Posted August 23, 2016 Oil pans off and the lower half of the seals out. Is there any way to get the top half out with out removing the cam? Various youtube vids show people just tapping it out with a punch. Is there a specific direction i need to tap from and is there a better tool for the job? Akula69 Posted August 23, 2016 Share Posted August 23, 2016 Not really. A small bore punch directly on the stiffening wire is the way. I have one that is about 8 inches long that I wrap with masking tape (protect the crank bearing surfaces). Once the top seal is partially out you can usually push it with your finger the rest of the way. In really difficult cases I have loosened (not removed) mains 5 and 6 - allows the crank to move just enough to loosen the seal up. Good luck! Pete M Posted August 23, 2016 Share Posted August 23, 2016 I used a long brass punch. steel could dent the engine block. a bit of soap helped put the new one in. a word of warning though, if you in anyway nick or bend or otherwise damage the new seal, stop and get an new one. in fact, buy 2 while you're at the store. :thumbsup: also, make sure the silicone on the oil pan has had the full opportunity to cure before starting up the engine. :yes: as you can tell, my first RMS didn't go so smoothly. :( if I remember right, I dropped the pan 5 times. :fs1: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

About the 4th time of doing it and not finding anything visibly wrong with the removed seal, I started looking for other issues. The crankcase breather was clogged and pressurizing the crankcase and blowing oil past the seal. jdritchey98 Posted August 25, 2016 Share Posted August 25, 2016 I just did mine back in May. I changed the seal and the oil pan gasket. After I got it all put back together I put fresh oil and a filter in it. I started it up and didn't see anything dripping so I figured it was ok so I began the 30 minute drive home. We got going down the highway and all I saw behind me was a giant cloud of oil smoke. When I got home I looked under the truck and the entire driver side of the front axle was soaked and dripping with oil as well as everything else on that side of the truck. From what I can tell it's leaking from the oil pan but I'm not sure. Right now as long as I keep it just under the add Mark it doesn't spew oil everywhere but it is still losing a little.
