grinch Posted August 20, 2016 Share Posted August 20, 2016 Hey guys, my truck didn't come with the original keys, only copies. I'd like to get some keys made that match the original factory OEM keys. I found some blanks on eBay, but I don't really know if they exactly match what came from the factory. grinch Posted August 21, 2016 Author Share Posted August 21, 2016 kessler's on ebay have 2 for 35.00 Yes I saw those, unfortunately my research (on this forum and others) indicates that the RA3 key will work for the Comanche doors, but the RA4 key will NOT work for the ignition. Strokermjcomanche Posted August 21, 2016 Share Posted August 21, 2016 Fwiw , I had purchased 2 pair of key blanks for my truck from eBay and they ended up not having the right cut . After that I went to the local locksmith and they had the correct original keys in stock and I had 4 pairs made for LESS than I paid for the 2 pair on eBay . Instead of paying $35 for a pair of keys I'd check with your local locksmith first, and if they don't have them they may be able to order them for you cheaper . They look just like flatslugs above, and that's period correct: jeep w/ amc logo on one side and american motors and logo on the other side. In using some random key from who knows what, you can giggle the cylinder enough, remove this random key, and then simply turn the bezel (shroud around where the key should be) as you would normally....only without any key at all in the ignition....and viola it fires up the truck. It will shut off also (5 speed). But if you turn the bezel back too far to the lock position you are screwed and have to being the process all over again. I called the jeep dealer and asked if they could supply me with an ignition key if I supplied them the VIN, they looked on the PC and it is a discontinued item they claim. Should I buy the truck and take it from there or should I ensure I can get a true key for the ignition? Of course I may want to lock the doors also.....so, I will have to do the same with door keys I assume. Does anyone have ANY advice for me? gogmorgo Posted October 11, 2016 Share Posted October 11, 2016 You may be able to get a key cut locally by a locksmith. Blanks are definitely still available, just maybe not from ChryCo. Working without the key once unlocked is normal, although I'm not positive it should just slide out once it's turned. Chances are if jiggling a random key in it gets it to turn, it means you can probably just do it with a screwdriver and some jiggling... The cylinder is totally worn out at that point and needs to be replaced. If you buy the Omix-Ada one it probably comes with the incorrect keys though. His trunk key was so worn that it would work as a master key -- he could open the doors of more than 90% of the new cars on their lot. No, the key should not slide out of the ignition when it's not in the locked position. As already commented, if it does -- it's time to replace the cylinder. Thanks The ignition cylinder should be replaced, and new cylinders aren't that expensive. It's a GM Saginaw steering column, so the cylinders are readily available.
