Axle and Ubolt pics.

Ok CC, we need your help on a tech project a friend and I are working on. We need pics and measurement of The AMC 20, D44 and D35 axles tubes and Ubolts. Also please state year, model axle and wether or not you have Trac- Loc or Open carrier as well. Thank You.

All of the measurements have been posted before, probably several times, but the highlights of that post:

Rear Axles
AMC-20 - 29 Spline, one piece axle shafts, 8.875" Ring Gear; Metric Tonne axle in 86.
Dana 35 non c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 86-89
Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 89-92
Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube - used 87-89 on some, (not all) MJs equipped with towing package.

I realize that now. Maybe if you shed some light on what you were planning people would be more willing to participate? I'm not trying to be unhelpful or prying or anything, but I imagine I'm not the only one with the same reaction to seeing at first what looks like a request for a bunch of info that is already available.

Why is the locker/open detail important? if the axle has one or not should have nothing to do with the size of the axle tube and ubolts..... :hmm:

Now here's the question that sparked the debate/inquiry between my buddy and I. All the D44 references he has states it should be a 2.75" housing. Now all but one of my D44's are Tracloc. The open carrier D44 mic at 2.75" while both the Tracloc D44's mic at 3". This had us curious as to "Is there a difference between the Tracloc housings compared to open ones?

I know it sounds weird but thats why we are looking for actual pic measurements of all housings instead of just a typed response.

Our initial plan is to compile all our pics and findings after to accompany the older typed reports/findings.

For what it's worth, all the D44 axle housings used on the MJ throughout the years, Trac-Lok / open diffs not withstanding, carried the same part number, 83503055. No housing differences, all had the same size axle tubes. Same for the XJs. I don't know about the 100's of other D44 axles used on non-Jeep vehicles.

See, thats the weird thing that i stated, it should be but both the Traclocs i have are at 3"?, when it's supposed to be less? As far as i know, both axles are OE. One is 1986 MJ D44 LSD and the other is 1987 XJ D44 LSD. I have an open carrier MJ, not sure of year it came out of, D44 that measures exactly as the specs say it should.

 

So, I've kinda been scratching my head at this oddity. Then again, we all know the two common jokes for AMC right? All Makes Car and Abortion Motor Company. Lol

When I swapped in my MJ D44 axle with Trac-Lok (from an 89 MJ), I reused the same 9/16" u-bolts from the old D35 c-clip axle since they were brand new. Reused the same leaf spring plates too.  :dunno:

I guess i just have to take it for what it is. Atleast we have some assurance that we're not crazy because of everything saying it should be 2.75". Thanks

Not possible. The heavy-duty axle in 1986 wasn't a Dana 44 it was an AMC Model 20.

Not here to argue over what came in what year. Just trying to make sense of why they're a 1/4" larger than all the specs i can find.

You could chalk maybe one of the two to not being OE, but Two from ALMOST identical platforms.

Hmm.  I'm going to measure the XJ D44 I have when I get home, and see if it is a Trac-loc or not.  It seems really odd to me if you got two with 3" tubes when that isn't something that's ever been documented before.

 

The good news is going to 3" tubes is considerably stronger than 2.75".

could it be that someone just used the wrong u bolts at one point in time? and that they aren't 3" tubes as this is not a documented measurement.. what about taking the circumference measurement right from the tube and reverse calculating it to diameter.    circumference divided by pi

They could even be the right u-bolts and they're just splayed out a bit. They're not exactly a dimensionally critical part and its common for then to only be close.

 

I assumed he had measured the tubes with a caliper or squares.
