The Beast, Papa Mel's 1st Jeep MJ

Recommended Posts

This is a few photos of the 1990 MJ I bought last month, only paid $200 for it. Base model, says Sport Truck on the sides (really faded out) short bed, 4 on the floor, 2.5l (only hitting on 3 cylinders) replaced cap/wires/rotor/plugs and #3 cylinder is dead, will know what's up with it when I get the head off. Put in a cheapy seat cover, that was a mistake, keeps slipping all over the place. Made a 2 cup cupholder for it, found out afterwards the one towards the driver is almost useless---unless drinking from a can, LOL :)   I then mounted 2 plastic cupholders up on the dash, they look like crap---but they do work out better, LOL.  Might seriously think about making a completely new console for it, have a few ideas and sketches kickin' around.

It's a little rough around the edges, alright---it's really rough all the way around, LOL :)  I know it's no beauty queen (or princess) but as long she gets me and the poles out to the lake and back, it's all good, LOL :)  With the new stereo and speakers, it makes the going that much better :)  But seriously, I have a long way to go to fix her up right. Frontend is looser than a thug's trousers, rides stiffer than a grocery cart on a gravel road and the exhaust system is about to fall out from underneath it. Has a bit of cancer on the driver's floor area---and the list goes on and on.

Definitely a fixer upper, but it's nice to see a member relatively close by working on one of these.  I'm trying to build up a little bit of a network for guys in this region, as there aren't a whole lot of us.  Mainly for parts and the like.  If you are looking for anything in particular let me know and I can keep an eye out at the local junkyards for you.  I usually make my rounds every 2-3 weeks.

**Impulse**,

Nice to here from someone else from around here :)  Here in Topeka I've seen a total of 4 Comanches running around, only seen 3 in the "yards" (gutted to the max).  Been looking for the lower dash trim panel (with the ashtray) color is not important, going to paint everything black anyway. Really needing a head for it, 2.5l tbi, #3 cylinder is totally dead. Replaced plugs/wires/cap/rotor/battery---still dead.  Being on SS disability, I can only do so much every month---but it's not stopping me from working on "The Beast" LOL :)

The lower dash panel and ashtray can come from any 96 and older XJ as well.  Plenty of those pop up around here so I can definitely grab one if you can't find one locally.  That 2.5L head on the other hand will be really hard to find around here. Not many 4 pots end up in the yards around me

Wouldn't mind having a "6-pack" under the ol' hood, but with all the suspension, exhaust and so on----best for me (and my pocketbook) to keep what I have :)  Just need to get it running decent first, then all the other stuff will come along in time :)  I am in the middle of putting a tilt column in her right now, have a couple of issues with it though, should have that sorted out shortly :)

Getting a little worried now, pulled the valve cover and everything is as it should be. All pushrods, rockerarms and valves seem to be tight and are moving as they should. Retainer brackets are tight as well.  Won't be able to know any more about it until I yank the head off. Right now I'm in the middle of replacing the standard column with a tilt one from an XJ.

I finally crawled under The Beast, was not wanting to see what I did see :(  Driver side shock---all that's there is the top half of the shock, rest of it is totally gone. All 3 of the other shocks are blown, fluid all over them (not motor oil, thankfully).  Load sensor (?) arm is swinging in the wind, thinking it mounts to the side of the diff', not sure on this one. I'll do some Googling and see what it's supposed to look like, LOL :)  On a good note, the cancer that is in the driver side floor area (to the right of the gas pedal) is not really that bad.  That's something that I know I can take care of, LOL :)  Going to take the valve cover off tomorrow and see if I can figure out what's up with the #3 cylinder.  Good friend of mine suggested it may even be as simple as a bent pushrod, said he's had it happen to him twice before, once in his CJ and few months later in his MJ.  Hoping that's all it is, but if not-----it's off with The Beast's head, LOL :)

Load sensing valve is supposed to look like this:

You'll probably notice a huge improvement in braking with it put the right way. If the rod coming out of #1 is vertical it pretty much shuts your back brakes off.

The valve and the arm that is connected to it are both there. Missing the rod and whatever else that connects the rod to the diff'.  I checked out the link on the diy adjustable rod, going to do that asap. I do a lot of hauling and that little trick would make doing it a lot safer. Thank you so much for all the help "Comanche Addict" :)
