The nice thing about bucket seats is the truck qualifies as a carpool if you have two occupants regardless of the carpool minimum occupancy requirement. Here that also means half the bridge toll. ggcnash Posted July 16, 2015 Share Posted July 16, 2015 Looks great lot of work though, I detailed cars in school the problem is doing this way it takes so many repetitions because the dirt your not able to remove is basically being spread out (less noticeable). Next time, try renting a shampoo machine 10$ a day from dollar general (rug doctor) with upholstery attachment you will be amazed! 91Pioneer Posted July 16, 2015 Author Share Posted July 16, 2015 Renting the rug doctor machines around here is about $25-30/day. The can of stuff I had was basically free (had it laying around). Yeah when I was blotting the dirtyness up I realized it really was just dispersing the dirt :) My earlier plan was to remove the seat covers but I cannot get one of the headrests off, so I got lazy LOL. I'd like to fix those two holes in the seat bottom and maybe replace the cushion on the bottom so if I do have it apart I will probably just put it in the laundry with some OxyClean, I hear that works wonders. Looks pretty good Found spending the weekend taking the seat(s) completely apart....scrubbing the snot out of them and then putting them through two cycles the washing machine and then letting them air dry ( in the sun hopefully ) is the best. ParadiseMJ Posted July 17, 2015 Share Posted July 17, 2015 If my Jeep had an intact bench seat when I got it, I probably would have kept it. But it was barely held together with tape and wire. Got 2 buckets at the JY (2 door XJ seats) so I couldn't pass them up...but they were filthy. I used Oxy Clean and a brush and sprayed them down with the hose, soaked them twice, left them out to dry in 100 degree "dry" heat. When I got back to them 2 days later this is what I found. Are there special hooks/tools needed? If you have removed seat covers before, it's not to difficult but it is time consuming. You will need hog ring pliers and hog rings for re-installation. You also need side cutters, pliers ( needle-nose) super thin plastic sheeting and patience. I removed my seat cover in about two hours. After removing the seat from the truck. Take your time, cut off the hog rings. Slowly pull the cover off and taking the time to find the .hidden hog rings and working around the stiffening rods. Remove any stiffening rods. Throw the seat cover in the washing machine a few times on the gentle cycle. I used some spot remover spray on the real heavily soiled areas. Ran the seats through the was 2x and they looked great. Re-installation, you reverse your process. One trick is to apply a super thing layer of plastic over the seat cushion to make the seat cover slip easier back onto the cushion. You will do a lot of pulling and togging to get the cover back into position. Make sure the stiffening rods go back into place, install the seat cover and hog rings were applicable. Of course this was a short explanation, but the process is not real hard, but you need to know to look for the retainers ( hog rings) so you don't tear the seat. I "pre-treated" a set of XJ seat covers then threw them in the washer for one cycle and they came out great. Wish I had know that when I put the new bottom bucket in. Was like trying to squeeze 10 lbs of s#^! into a 5 lb bag. The pic below shows the old part and the new. Both are the same p/n............ Probably went to every hardware, hobby, fabric and auto parts store in the area. Harbor Freight has them The bench seat reassembly effort is nothing like the bucket seat, cover goes on much easier. My drivers side seat cushion was not supportive, the foam was surprisingly ok, one of the springs was busted, slid some cardboard between the springs and the foam and it was like new, still is 2 years later.
