Please help!! 4x4 what stay in high or low

Recommended Posts

Ok so I had an issue where my rear driveshaft caught on rock and broke it off took it to mechanic and he got a new driveshaft and I had him install posi-lok so I could get rid of 4x4 popping out with vacuum system well now after getting back today it still pops out in 4wd high and low. Anyways I am stuck in driveway and I'm wondering what the heck happened is it the t case?

so how do you know the 4wd is working?

is there any noise when this starts happening?

do the front tires seem to jump at all as if trying to go?

are you rolling when you engage your front axle? by this i am getting at is there a chance the fork is not lining up when you try so it is never really engaged?

but there is no noise?

a pop like something coming out

a grind like something is not engaged fully

to be clear, both front tires are dead. no chance the passenger side is spinning and you can't see it out your window?

if i had to guess and, thats all it is,  i would say your axle disconnect is not fully engaging so it will turn the tires but when under a heavier load it is pushing the fork back to the  disconnected side.

i have not used a posi lok  but it is a cable pushing and pulling a fork into place.

if it is out of adjustment it might not be engaging.

or if the splines are not lined up when you try to engage it, it could feel like you have pulled the cable to the end but really you have not engaged the outer shaft yet.

i would play around with it to see if by moving the truck you can get it to engage further.   before really putting torque to it try and be sure it is all or nothing. don't want to blow anything up trying to make it engage.

I'm positive it's not spinning but it doesn't really make sense that it would do that with posi lok installed unless it's not adjusted right there might be a slight popping noise

The posi loc only engages the front diff. It does not "lock" the front tires together like locking diff would. So it does make sense that the passenger side tire could be spinning and the driver side standing still.

I think what's happening is that when it gets pressure of any sort it is popping out so I might need to adjust cable like optimus2 said but I'm nervous that it could be transfer case only because before I installed posi lok it was jumping out of 4x4 and I thought it was a vacuum issue.

Start eliminating the simple and free stuff first: is the t-case selector fully engaging the t-case? Wear can cause problems there. You already mentioned checking the posi-lok. That is a definite possibility. It is not hard to open the actuator and make sure that the fork is engaging.

what options do you have for you transfer case? 2H 4H 4L  or is there a full time 4WD option?

in either case if you have it in 4 low and it "jumps out" you would be in neutral and not spinning anything.   if it was something in the transfer case slipping or jumping but not coming out of gear, you would hear and feel it.

look into the posi lock  for both adjustment and proper use.   The fact that you were having problems before raises some concern but the vacuum system is know to leak and cause issues. you replaced that system, but there is a chance the new system is not set up right.   If you are engaging the front axle while sitting still is asking for problems with either system. so perhaps the problem has always been proper use?

again I have never used the posi lock set up.   but i would engage the front axle while rolling while easing into the throttle i would keep pressure on the cable so if the splines lined up better the fork would be able to further engage.    i would make sure i was really engaging as much as i could in your current set up before making adjustments.

I have the option of 2h,4h,N, and 4 low. I am now stuck in driveway I finally got it into 4 wheel drive this morning after 15 mins of trying different things and as I went up driveway I started to spin in mud in 4L and it maid a loud pop and all power went to back wheels but it definitely was still in low. It doesn't make sense when I'm on dry pavement it clicks right into 4x4 but then I get in mud at the end of my driveway and and it pops out and goes to all back tires but it's something to do with front cause it is still in low just powering back tires

Your Chain is stretched....That is the "POP".....The reason you do not notice on dry pavement is that all the tires are rotating at the same speed so there is no stress on the chain....In the mud the rear tires have power and spin....the front want to spin but can't because POP the chain jumps off the cog.

Chains are easy to change....search the site there is a nice write up with pics.....

Check transfer case linkage. If you did hit something with the driveshaft, if could have moved the tcase and bent the linkage, since the linkage is mounted to the tcase and the body if one moves without the other something has to give. Unhook the linkage and manually run the bell crank on the side of the case and see if it stays engaged. Just something to check before you go tearing anything apart.
