Tps is evil

Recommended Posts

Hello. New guy needs help. 88 pioneer 4.0 4x4 220,xxx. It flat out died. After finally arranging to pull it out back (couple hrs ltr) it started. Ran long enough to get back to my yard...and died. Will restart after waiting but will eventually stall. I've only just started Cruisers list. Now I'm jumped ahead to the tps which does not give me a voltage reading on the engine side. Actually got readings last night but being so dark I wanted to recheck today, next to nothing now. Have to really dig to get ANY readings. Did get the tranny side set. It was a concern so did it then got the probs with the engine side. Hope this is at least clear as mud but anything you guys can throw at me will be appreciated. Got to get er back! She's my DD! Want to check the cps at least for build up but I don't even know where to spot it. Thx

Build up on a cps will be at the tip of the sensor. That usually only happens with manual transmission equipped vehicles, though. I would go through Cruiser's tips. It sounds like you may have more than one issue. When I started reading your post, my knee jerk reaction was to say that your CPS is toast (my Jeep acted like that when the CPS died). Upon further reading though, you may have multiple issues...or a bad engine ground. Check it. It's right by the dipstick.

You need to begin with Tip 1 and continue to 5. Don't skip around.

Thx cruiser and benjy. I am on it. During the time I spend working on the MJ I have to pay attention to my wife's ZJ. No interior lights and rapid blinkers w headlights on. Does anyone know a GC site that may b nearly as good as this one or know where I'll find body and chassis grnds on a 97 GC?

Sorry for the long response time. Enjoying the spring after a wicked winter! And yes the CPS was the culprit. Working now on the Bosch 69302 retrofit and taking a break from breaking my knuckles trying to loosen the lock ring! The pump is loud enough to hear in the cab now. Otherwise all seems well. Got through Cruisers list and will upgrade/add grounds and the supplemental wiring harnesses as I am able.

88 Pioneer short box

4wd

231 tcase (where are the

new chains to b had?)

Still a stock truck but I'm happy w it. Paid a bit for it but it's in great shape. 230,xxx. Power options. It's one of the blue w blue flares models. Wanna get black flares. It'll b all black and blue and I call it 'Bruiser'. Can even get the Wife to turn a wrench sometimes so it's all good. Think I'm gonna get set up and get a sticker and a t shirt. Thanx much again. You'll b hearing from me soon enough to b sure

My lock ring forumula was soaking it a bunch of times with liquid wrench and PB Blaster, then using a BFH and a large ended punch to drive the ring back.  Took quite a few good solid hits before it even budged.
