Potential buyer with issues

Recommended Posts

Looking at a 1987 MJ with 1988 XJ drivetrain. Runs fine but the automatic tranny has to be shifted through gears manually. It has 175k miles on the xj parts and I'm looking to swap them out. My buddy has a 2002 wrangler that he totalled and I can buy the drivetrain off him...will a 2002 engine/5 speed/transfer case bolt into the mj? If not, what manual transmissions will bolt to the 88 xj 4.0? I was told it had to be 1996 and older

Help needed asap!

Thanks

Kody

A 2002 Wrangler should still have the 4.0L and the NV3500 transmission. The 3500 is better than the AX-15.

It should bolt in. That's the combination in my 2000 XJ. Remember to swap the flywheel (unless you're going to use the entire engine from the Wrangler.)

The fix could be as simple as replacing a fuse.......

Wasn't sure if they changed the engine between 88 and 00 though. Just because its a 4.0 doesn't mean it will bolt up. But what do I know, thats why I'm here

They still kept the same bellhousing pattern for the 4.0s...

The main issues that you see are the transfer cases may be clocked a different angle that may interfere with the transmission tunnel...

Got a buddy with an 89 cherokee with the nv3500 and it has an inch of space but he has a 2" transfer case drop...

So is it a trial and error type deal? No exact answer?

I just wanna swap the auto to a manual. What ever is the easiest and cheapest route

I have access to a nv3550 locally so I will go that route if I know exactly what I need. The truck itself is in good condition so the auto tranny issue does not scare me. Winter is approaching and need it swapped before then

In my opinion you are better off swapping the entire drive train less the DS (of course).

You'll want a XJ shifter or aftermarket.

And have a new DS made.

The TC can be reclocked, I have a Wrangler AX5 that I reclocked.

I have the 2.5 AX5 and the auto harness plug is included on the harness, it just hands off the firewall with the rest of the harness.

Chances are he is not smart enough to realize that you need to install the TCU........I assume he thought you can just plug it in.

Is the truck in the pic worth $3500? all things OK with it other wise? then yeah, it's worth it.

TCU will probably cost you $35 at he PnP.

Oh, and you'll need an auto TPS if one is not already there, they are the cheaper ones though.

Everything on the truck is in good shape. New lift with xj axles. Interior is rough but not a big deal. Only issue is the auto tranny. I don't mind buying the tcu and tps to get the tranny to work correctly. Only thing that sux is it has to be manually shifted with no tachometer. Good thing ive driven manuals my whole life so I know when to shift gears.

Easy enough to find out...look under the dash.  The TCU is on the pass. side, right under the glove box.  Reach in there grab the wiring, pull it out, check the fuse.  If the fuse is blown, replace it and drive without shifting it manually.

If there is no TCU make sure you get a Renix TCU.  Even if you get a 91+ AW4...trust me!!  Right Pete?!
