jcr offroad or nates 4x4 rear mj bumper?

Recommended Posts

ok so i like the look of the jcr bumper for the comanche better than i do the nates 4x4 one but i was wonderin, has anyone ever bought one of the two, my whole concern is the D-ring tabs, the jcr one has the tabs more towards the bumber ends where nates tabs are more towards the hitch receiver, which would be better for offroad recovery?

I bought a front/rear bumper & Rocksliders from nates4x4.

They're EXTREMELY behind schedual right now, And are over a month out on orders. Took over a month to get the front & rear bumpers & I STILL havent recieved my rocksliders. Ordered them all on the 3rd of last month.

So if speed is a priority, I'd go with jcr.

Other then that, They're extremely well made. The welds are nice & heavy duty, The mounting brackets are pretty overkill, Which is nice. I can't really comment on the d'tabs yet, As i havent had the chance to take them out & try them, Been waiting on the sliders before going wheeling again.

I did however ask him to make my rear bumper 64", And he shipped me a 62" version instead ~___~

And there is a coupon "Seasonal" Or something like that, For nates which takes off 10-15%~

That is just the way it is for getting Jeep stuff. People get months behind and you hope the stuff eventually shows up. Hopefully they don't skip town with peoples' money (cough cough rocklizard cough) like way too many fabricators, even bigger ones, have done in the past.  I ordered decals, just decals, from a reputable dealer pixeldecals. It took about a month (ordered 7/7 shipped 8/10 arrived 8/14) to get them! I was fine with the quality but sheesh....

Nates's looks pretty generic but at least it is a bumper. As always JCR's *kit*, at $50 more than Nate's completed bumper, is over-priced IMHO.  Then add the cost of wire & electricity to weld it even if your time for such meticulous work means nothing. IF you have the ability to weld it well enough. Their tag line of  "We provide a high quality product that won’t break the bank. As wheelers, we know you want to spent your extra money getting out on the trails and with our product line, we aim to help keep as much of your hard earned cash lining your own pocket!" doesn't seem to be anything but advertising puffery.

The JCR MJ DIY kit is well designed and goes together nicely. I assisted the fabricator I hired in some of assembly and all the pieces went together very well. The JCR kit is more expensive due to all the extra pieces, cuts, and bends they have incorporated into it. The Nates 4x4 finished bumper is simple and great for getting a durable bumper. I could not recommend one as better than the other since they fill different segments of the market. The MJ market is so small that JCR took a chance just making the DIY kit after their original run of finished rear MJ bumpers bombed on them. Since the Nates 4x4 rear bumper is so simple they can easily fulfill a custom order for a MJ.

so all said and done, price wise nates is cheaper, look wise jcr looks better, but how bout strength, durablity, those D-rings, how do they hold up, that's my main concern,

Redwolf

The shackle hangers on the JCR weld to the face of the bumper, the rear of the bumper, the two main mounting brackets, and the two secondary mounting brackets. They are essentially tow hooks with a bumper hanging off them.

Pretty sure the 4.0l won't either.

Nates rear is through-welded tabs, You'll probably break the chain/rope long before it goes.

havin the power to pull em off my be aint the issue, i'm just worried bout someone in my jeep club pullin my idiot self out of a mud rut and wankin me like last time, i got whip lash from it if that gives yall an idea of how bad he was wankin the jeep, also if i go somewhere on my own and get stuck but there's a truck there i'd like to have them pull me out if need be,

so the jcr would be more likely to be pulled off than the nates since the d ring mounts are only surface welded, my thing is i saw what happen to my bumper when i have it pulled from the center (it was also bein pulled upward but still the center is fubar) i just don't know which is better in the long run, the outside mounts like JCR or the inside mounts like Nates, i just don't want another warped bumper when i gotta get pulled out,

$279 + you had to farm out the labor + spend your own time. So what is a realistic cost of this bumper assembled using that process so that an apple-to-apples comparison can be made?

$195 on sale

$45 shipping

$340 that I paid to the fabricator. $40 of that was a tip because he did such a good job. $200 for the welding, $100 for the finish grinding work.

$580 - I could have welded it myself if I trusted my structural welding skills.

Reviewing Nate's 4x4 design I would not use it for any serious recovery or towing. It does not bolt to the underside of the frame and the frame brackets do not have any side bracing to prevent bending. The shackle hangers are not welded to the frame brackets directly and rely on the four bolts holding the bumper to the brackets.

I like to look of the JCR bumper.  But I don't use the truck off road, so $580 is a bit much for a bumper in my situation.  Nicely built and understand the extra cost over the very simple Nate bumper.

You quoted the post above with the picture I put up showing the back side of the shackle hangers welded to the main and secondary frame mounts. The outer back edge weld to the side of the main mount, the inner back edge to the bumper rear and secondary mount, and a few other spots in there that are hard to see.

I have a factory type class 3 hitch that fits just under the stock step bumper.  In fact it bolts to the factory step bumper.  So I am wondering how "tall" the JCR bumper is in relation to the stock step bumper?  Will the factory class 3 hitch fit under the JCR bumper?  Anyone know.

I have the Nates rear bumper on my truck but I haven't had a chance to test it out yet. Had the matching set on my old Cherokee from Nates and they held up to everything I threw at them which included a fullsize Chevy diesel and numerous Toyotas and Jeeps.

Just FYI, Pixel Decals does everything in batches, so its not made right when you order.  I've been looking at some for my JK, so I hope it doesn't take more than a month.
