1986 WOLFRED build thread

Recommended Posts

So I've never thought about keeping up a build thread for my MJ but I've decided not to restore my truck to stock, i'm gonna build it up.  When I first got my 86 MJ it was just a truck to get me from point A to point B but now it is my baby. This was my wolfred (or beast) when I first got it.

I've had to replace the 2.8 V6 engine with another; the transplant engine came out of a 1993 GMC Sonoma with fuel injection but I converted it to carb and after all that work this is what Beast looked like.

After all that and replacing the clutch slave cylinder I found a decent set of fog lights from walmart that didn't last long and I even played with the grille style....some more pictures  :D

i currently have this one installed

chrome one

fog lights

After that it's been audio upgrades, better radio, speakers, new shocks, tune ups and so on. Then i got a Hi-Lift

Then it was the flag pole everyone said would fail  :rotfl2: and yes it hold at 65MPH on the highway, my gas mileage sucks though  :rotf:

Found some "air horns" at pepboys

I'll take some pictures of them installed tomorrow when the sounds up, but after all that i've been enjoyin my MJ just drivin it around to work and to hang out with friends then my jeep club invited me to corolla beach in NC   . :MJ 1: . 2wd tamed a 4x4 only beach

little bit of flex at Micky Ds

Then I went out so a fellow jeepers land and got stuck, this was the aftermath of bein pulled out by a 89 YJ  :fs1:

I have a roll bar in my bed but not mounted and no lights, I'll get a picture of that tomorrow,

Well, there goes another stock rear bumper...  Mine's banged up too, but not from getting pulled.  PO backed into something or someone hit him.

Glad to see you're starting a build thread though.  When are you going to pop in a 4.0? lol

whenever i can take the 4.0 out of my brothers eliminator

well today i didn't get around to the relays or the turn signal cam (due to sleepin in) but i need get around to finishing the roll bar and paintin it and rebuildin the carb. The carb actually had to be rebuilt, my float level was high, my needle and seat were shot from the gas, and the seal on the accelerator pump road was ripped in half, that explains my engine performance problems. On another note, i have pictures of the tires (like promised) and the roll bar bein primed and finished when it's painted  :D

the rims the BFGs were on

my turbine rims with the BFGs on em

dad priming my roll bar with my brother's 89 eliminator in the background

and painted

so i've scrapped the idea of relays since i didn't get them to work the fog lights, now my fog lights are wired to a switch just like before and don't cut off with the hi beams  :dunno: oh well, covers will be made for inspection. I'm now bolting in the roll bar and i even got my rear bumper bent back straight  i'll take pictures of the bumper tomorrow when it's not so dark,

went to a local mud hole and i don't know what i did to finish the engine off but i blew it, spun rod barrings and the crankshaft had a lot of play in it, so i went to the junkyard and pulled another (i know i know...crappy engine) 2.8 out of a 89 firebird and just doin some slight tweakin on it to make it run better, but this is hopefully only temporary but as it looks i might be gettin a new MJ cause of off-roadin with a 2wd MJ in some really bad places  but it was fun while it lasted

takin the firebird 2.8 off the trailer

the firebird on the engine stand waiting for everything to be put on it

blown sonoma 2.8

empty engine bay :( didn't even have time to start cleanin it

i honestly think it sits 3" higher with no engine

putting the firebird engine together

dropping it in finally

So you wasted not only everyones time but, your money buying cheap knock off spacers? A fool and his money are soon parted.

All I can say is wow. I will no longer waste my time with you. Good luck!

Did I miss something? I have read this thread and didn't see anything about cheap spacers. Unless Titan spacers suck.

1. they're not cheap knock off, look just like spidertrax
2. still were over 100 bucks at 104 for

3. is what everything yall told me to get

and yall are right, they're unuseable at the moment, i need to by longer wheel studs, i accomplished nothin today other than finding out i need longer studs. And as for you shelbyluvv, i did not waste anyone's time, i was doin what i've always been told called RESEARCH, i don't always have money for top name brand stuff that's 80% of the time made the same as the "knock-offs" here's a hint, as long as i install the spacers right and get hub-centric i'll have no problem.....stanley is just as good as snap-on

next thing there gonna tell us is they don't have any tools from harbor freight and the snapon or craftsman tools are all made in usa.

just because its not name brand doesn't mean less quality. i break snap on s and k mac tools craftsman husky all the time. also air tools husky has the best air tools lifetime warranty ive broke a few IR and won't pay for them again

I dig this truck. As far as the spacers, they look just like my Spidertrax units except for thr lack of anodizing. Time will tell whether they're good or not, I guess. I personally wouldn't ditch this MJ, though. If it were me, I'd do a 4wd conversion, slap in a fresh 3.4, and throw some kind of aftermarket EFI or propane conversion on it to make the wiring easy.

looks, i aint here to start an arguement on my build thread, i'm just sayin that everything is made the same now, as long as you use somethin the way it was intended to be used you won't break it and it won't be unsafe (unless defective) that's all i'm sayin

propane conversion? i'd rather pay the price of gas, but a 4wd swap is coming once i have the funds for it and another daily driver i'll do everything i want to do to it, 4.0 or 4.2 swap, and 4wd convertion

4.2?

x2

Although more reliable/bullet proof than any GM 2.8, I don't quite understand the logic behind this.  That's a complete step backwards.  You'd be worlds ahead with a GM 3.4, not to mention the ease of swap.  The 4.0 is a huge step forward as well, but take it from someone who knows, it's a lot of work.

The 3.4 swap is very popular in the Fiero world because it's a bolt in swap with inherent upgrades. Better oiling and reliability, better power, very cheap and easy to find. I'm not sure why there's so much resistance to it. I'm not sure why you'd ever pass it up for another 2.8. I have a 4.0 in mine and I like it but I don't see how it's worth the extra effort over a 3.4. It's a neat engine but it's not the holy grail. Maybe my history with the ls v8 spoiled me.
