What 'upgrade' Fuel Injectors Do I Purchase? '92 4.0L

Hello All! :thumbsup:

 

So I heard somewhere that I could swap out my stock injectors (I have a 1992 4.0L in-line 6, :)) for some '4-way spray' ugraded injectors that could possibly bump up my fuel efficiency and give me a little boost in power/torque.

 

Is this true...? I have an otherwise stock 'manche.

 

If so, what is the model, make and possibly part number of these injectors? I 've looked a couple places, but they just mention 'Neon' or '703'...I'm not sure exactly what that means...

 

Where could I purchse these new, once I know what I need?

You used these 39# injectors designed for the 98 and below log-type intake manifold in your 2000 XJ w. the "horseshoe" intake and 49# of regulated injector pressure? And all is well?

x2  I would think there is a noticeable difference, but a negative one, not a positive one.

The link I used was for what the OP needed I did not want to give him a link to what I bought as they would be wrong (unless you use adapters). They are however from the same ebay seller.

FWIW, entirely on a whim, i snagged two sets of orange top injectors out of a ford truck. 4.9 straight six, don't remember the year. I got 2 sets just in case some of them leaked. There were the 4 hole, don't know the # of lbs, but i figured it had to be a little more to handle the extra cubes. I cleaned them by taking a CLEAN glass jar, filled it with injector cleaner (think lucas product or something similar), dropped the injectors in totall submerged, shook the jar and let it sit for 24 hrs. I have at least 10,000 miles on these injectors without the slightest of issues. Throttle response improved dramatically, as did general seat-of-the-pants performance.

 

If you go with junkyard injectors, make sure you buy several extras if not an entire extra set.

Missed that part - sorry. I have an 01 intake manifold installed on the stroker and am still using the 91 fuel rail and OBD1 electrics so the "703" Bosch injectors w. the EV1 Jetronic connector is the correct replacement injector for me too. I've been using the 96-'99 XJ # 53030778 Grey top injectors (49psi @ 23.2lb/hr) single hole injectors for about six years and am thinking of upgrading to the 4-hole type as you did. What improvements are the most noticeable so far for you?

They have not been in long enuf to say anything about MPG. The XJ has 200000 miles on it and was a real dog no power and the acceleration was horrible at best. Its almost like a new engine the holes were were the injectors go were almost plugged shut with carbon also. The main reason I  did injectors was bad heat soak issues. I did the recalls, added hood vents and it was still very bad it would even throw a misfire code at times. It is much better now but not gone.

I have always referred to that as the butt dyno.

Buddy did the 5.0 injector mod on his '95 XJ. It to made a noticeable increase in throttle response. He says he did not realize an MPG increase but that could be due to the fun of the increased throttle response. He got them for off of craigslist for $15 from a Mustang guy who was going to bigger injectors.

Hi All,

 

So I bought and installed these injectors, above, and my Manche isn't running so hot. A couple notes and I hope you can help me out please.

 

1. I removed the plastic 'spacer' or 'top hat' these came with on the inlet side of the injector (near the motor) because it really didn't seem like they belonged or fit like the stock ones did. Is this correct?

2. I moved the oring that came with the refurbished in hectors into the grove of the injector,,,,Is this correct?

3. I added the stock oring from the stock injector to the refurbished injector so that the installed refurbished injector now has TWO orings on the injector….is this correct?

4. I reset the PCM module via instructions online b/c the idle was crappy. This seemed to help a little.

5. I drove the truck around the block and it ran like crap...

6. Engine check light came on immediately.

7. THe motor misfired and wouldn't accelerate properly..

8. I couldn't $#!& into third gear without the motor hesitating and lugging like crazy.

9. I stopped the truck and am waiting to hear back before I try again.

 

PLEASE HELP!

 

SHould I put the stock injectors back in?

 

Take out one of the two orings?

First let me say I am no expert the set I did was my first time also. I was not sure about the clear plastic hat thing mysef. I watched some videos online and it looked like they used them so I did also. As far as using two o rings I would think that would be no good as there not designed to be used that way. If it were me I would put the hats back on take the extra O Ring off and try again. Then if you still have trouble email the company you got them from maybe they can help trouble shoot you problem. Make sure you use a thin coat of oil on the rings when seating them or vaseline I used oil.

Another thought don't know how I missed this? Did you mark the injector wiring so the connectors went back on in the same place? If you got them mixed up that would cause the issue you describe (I think).

You said you kept the plastic hat-things on...it really seemed like the injectors didn't even fit or stayed in the injection ports with these on...was the oring in contact with the sealing surface for you with the hat-things on...??

 

I realize that I shouldn't have moved the o-ring that came with the injector ...:/

 

I need to go back in and do what you recommend.

 

Where did you find a video of these injectors being installed?

 

I found a couple videos, but the injectors look different...and more like the stock ones.

 

Another thing is that I'll probably give the Ebay seller a call and see what they say...maybe they know.

If your check engine light came on, what code(s) did you get?

I don't have a code reader right now...but when I drove it the check engine light came on and it was misfiring under acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear.

 

Please excuse my ignorance here, but is this OBD II? If so, where is the port located..? I remember looking and couldn't find one...but that was a wile ago.

WHAT year and model is your MJ?? There were no factory OBD2 MJs. If your MJ is a 91 or 92 it has no code reader test port because it's an OBDI system.  Check the codes using the ignition key and count the light flash pulses as explained in the link gogmorgo provided above.

 It's a 1992. that explains the lack of port :thumbsup:
