4Wd Swap Needs Done Asap, Need Answers

Recommended Posts

So driving home from work just now my dd XJ (1995 4.0, AW4, Np231) broke the block at the motor mount. Instead of even attempting to fix this I am being rushed into performing the swap into my 90 MJ (1990, AW4, 2wd) that has a bad transmission. I need this done as quickly as possible, my plan is to pull the trans/Transfer from the XJ and installing them into the MJ.

Ive done some basic research and know a few things like use the 90 flywheel and that the drive-shaft won't fit, but other than that I'm in the dark. I have the help of a father in law that has been wrenching for his whole life and his garage with lift and tools. What things will i need to keep from the cherokee and what parts will i need to use from the comanche to make this swap as quick as possible?

I am going to be researching this all evening and hope to start tomorrow afternoon, so any help would be appreciated because i need this done asap and am currently without a vehicle till i get this swap done. Any help in lowering the amount of time spent on the computer researching swaps will help me spend more time performing the swap, thanks again.

You'll have to do some research to make the '95 AW4 work in your Renix.  I've never done it but I've heard it can be done with a little rewiring.  That's the most crucial part.  As far as drive shafts go, you'll need to get your rear drive shaft shortened.  Measure what it needs to be AFTER you swap in the new drive train.  No one can give you a definitive length for your rig, but a educated guess.  Other than that, the nonessential stuff to swap in when you're not in major need of your MJ is a front axle and front drive shaft.  Here's some detailed information about the AW4: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1053970

What wiring issues are you speaking of? From looking at the connectors on both vehicles (they appear almost identical) and the link you provided doesn't seem to mention anything about wiring changes? I am confused.

Also which crossmember should I use? Can I use the torque converter from the 95? Anything I need to know about swapping speedo setups or anything weird about putting a transfer case into a vehicle that has never had one before?

The newer aw4 trans has 2 extra wires inside the trans plugs (black and white ) towards the passenger side of the valve cover by the firewall. You will also need to use the tcu out of your xj also .

I would use the Comanche crossmember and the xj torque convertor.

If the mj speedo is mechanical then you'll have to find a longer speedo cable and a mechanical speedo part that fits in your tcase .

The mj was meant to be 4wd it's pretty straight forward.I'm in the middle of converting my 3rd truck to 4wd and my donor is a 95 xj but I'm doing a complete swap

There are ZERO differences in harness plugs, mounts, or function of the 95 aw4.

The trans bolts right up, and plugs right in.

What IS different is the torque converter bolt pattern. If your 2wd trans doesn't work, buy a new torque converter for the 90 (bad trans means contaminated fluid which means junk torque converter). Put a new front input seal on and call it a day.

Wait so seriously? The 95 torque converter will not bolt up to the 90 flywheel? I think the torque converter on the 90 might be junk already so if that true I need to call the parts store immediately.

I don't know how accurate those years are for the TC bolt patterns but I bolted a AW4 out of a 96 into my 92.

TC bolted up and wires plugged in.

car-part.com says 87-97 will work, that's from the Hollander interchange manual.

I don't know what the difference is from the 98-01's.

87-96 are bolt in and plug in.

www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1053970 will link you to a good thread with a ton of AW4 info.

That thread is by Kastein, a member on here.

My appologies on the trans jeepco . I coulda swore someone less than a month ago posted they had different wiring but I guess I shoulda checked the 88 and 95 in my garage lol.

I was under the same impression, but I admitted I never done this kind of swap.  Glad someone here with actual experience with this kind of thing was able to chime in.  Thanks Pat for clarifying.

So on this torque converter stuff, I want to make sure that I am buying the right part. The parts stores list the same part number for both the 90 and the 95, does anybody have measurements I can check the new one against or any insights on this dilemma?
