How do you replace the front wheel bearings?

Recommended Posts

Greetings to all!!

My baby is just about ready to roll.... however, it's been sitting so long that the front wheels won't spin freely. With some effort, I am able to spin them. I took off the tire and the brake caliper as well as the disc and tried to spin it. No go. So my next thought was bearings.... but wait a minute.... How.... w... my bearing "cap" is strange. It's not a cap at all. It looks inset with a couple tabs. How do you remove the cap that is there to replace the wheel bearings?

Thanks!

If it is 2wd I think you just replace the whole assembly. I think just the bearings can be replaced but you need a press or something and it is cheaper just to replace the whole assembly. Someone else should chime in and verify this. I'm not positive since mine is 4wd

so you can order a 2wd hub assembly? guess i could go look

If the front axle uses the unitized hub/bearing assemblies, they are the same for 2WD and 4WD. But some years the front axles of 2WD vehicles got conventional front axle bearings. I don't remember which years were which, though.
